Construction noise at 5:35am…. are you kidding me?

Muggle 27 May 2010 22

Hi,

We live near the new suburb of Crace… Imagine my annoyance when at 5:35 this morning I could hear really LOUD construction work starting…. sounded like metal being pounded in over and over and over again… now I wouldn’t mind if it was hammers etc, but this was so loud it woke us up, set the dog off and that was the end of our sleep…. It lasted for about 20 mins, most mornings it starts about 6:30am, which I don’ t mind so much, but when the sun isn’t even up I think that it is a bit rude….

If I complain do you think anyone will care?

Have you ever worked outdoors in the weather all day? that’s why they start/finish early.

How much stuff do you require to do your job that you must transport to and fro? that’s why they park on footpaths to be closer to work site.

If it was your house/ or kids school being built you were told sorry we won’t be finished for other 2 weeks due to noise restrictions how would you feel?

What if it was your partner who was working they arse off but was told sorry shut down, go home as you have made to much noise using the tools of your trade and by the way your not getting paid today.

wake up people get over it noise is part of every day life we live in a place that is booming at the moment and that’s putting money in all of our pockets.
yes 5;30 is a tad early but it happened one morning.(insert box of tissues here)

Typical tradie. I have to start when I want, finish when I want and park where I want.

You’ll understand if I return your comment about the box of tissues. We all have constraints to work under.

@rottweiler

start and finish early…okay in summer…dangerous to start in the dark of winter

transport to and fro…plan ahead so you only need to go to (the fro is not necessary until the end of day)

delay for 2 weeks…talk to the project manager you baby.

my partner who was working their arse off…don’t event go there!

get over it noise…ain’t putting any money in my pockets.

yes 5;30 is a tad early…yes it is…look, I have a skip full of tissues

give me a break – transporting stuff to and fro is one thing; have they heard about ‘unloading’ and then moving their vehicle to a legal parking site? and yes, i have worked where i transport heavy delicate and expensive equipment but have nonetheless managed to park legally and not obstructing others’ pedestrian access.

and if noise is part of everyday life then you’d not mind the neighbours drilling against your adjoining wall at three in the morning; it’s just a bit of noise and we all manage fine with sleep deprivation and society doesn’t suffer at all ’cause we’re all getting rich and can eat plastic money which will make us strong healthy wise and deaf enough to cope with a little kerfuffle now and again… sheesh!

I would feel like I was being spun a damned lie. Having to comply with construction noise regulations doesn’t cause projects to fall behind schedule.

That’s a funny tale, but again, having to comply with construction noise regulations doesn’t cause people to lose their livelihoods.

I guess that supersedes the relevant laws.

Oh, well that’s okay then. Why stop there? Let’s throw all environmental protection legislation out the window for it will enhance… somebody’s chances of making a quick buck.

Certainly a one-off occurrence is an annoyance. There’s no indication that it has done, but what if it continues, more tissues?

Yet, do we hear you complain about the GREAT roads-NO we don’t!

Call Canberra Connect, even at that time, and you’ll be put through to someone who can pursue it. This is a clear breach of the construction noise laws.
We had similar issues in Harrison when the school was being built and the TaMS noise pollution guy was quite good about shutting down the early starts.

Move to Kambah-or drink more the night before, jeezzz some people can find anything to complain about.

Long time reader first time poster. working in the construction industry i can tell you that it also stipulates in the DA Hours that can be worked. Should be able to check that out on the ACTPL website

@astrojax, call the parking people and report cars obstructing the footway. It’s illegal, and they don’t own the frigging footpaths (unless they get a permit for the duration of the work).

Who are the parking people?

In my experience with council offices here in the ACT, no-one seems to know who is responsible for what and all you’ll get is the duck shove treatment!

Gungahlin Al Gungahlin Al 1:30 pm 27 May 10

PS: Canberra Connect is 132281. Or online via http://www.contact.act.gov.au/app/home

I’ve found the online way more reliable, as there is a tracking mechanism in place.
4 attempts by phone over 5 months to get potholes southbound on Northbourne near Space fixed. One online request – action the next day, fixed within a week.

Use them. It is what they are paid for.

If only to shut you up.

Like Gungahlin AL says, follow up on noise laws, and then take it to the authoritahs. I’d be rope-able being woken at 5.35 am in the morning.

Yep, call TAMS. Construction contractors not supposed to start before 7am on weekdays, I believe. They have to start later on weekends, and there are a maximum number of hours per week – they can’t do it 7 days a week for extended periods. It’s on the website.

I had real problems with the f#ckers building the apartment block at the corner of Barry Drive and Northbourne. After ringing TAMS and complaining each and every time they started up at sparrow’s fart, they dramatically improved.

Also, I don’t get the mentality of people doing construction work in a residential area starting at 7am and knocking off at 3pm (which seems typical), when the -usual- hours that people will be away from home is 9-5 (or even 8-4).

try working out in the sun trix and you’ll see the appeal of an early start and finish.

Do you know if it was the civil works or the housing construction?

If it was the civil works, contact the developer directly, Canberra Investment Corporation (CIC) or the Land Development Authority (LDA) as it is a joint venture. They usually hate bad publicity and will see to it right away.

If it was the housing, then your best bet is TAMS or ACTPLA as mentioned above.

astrojax astrojax 12:47 pm 27 May 10

i wanna complain about construction workers parking on the footpath – why do they think they automatically have the right to park where they want when i don’t, just because they’re working there? but no-one would listen and i’d be written off as a cranky fart, so what’s the point.
