The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) Southside is a step closer to its new home with the tender awarded for its new fit-for-purpose facilities.
A capital investment of more than $5 million was allocated in the Budget Review to relocate CAMHS Southside from Callam Offices in Woden to a modernised, ground floor location in Bowes Place.
Monarch Building Solutions has been awarded the construction contract, and work is set to begin in the coming weeks.
ACT Mental Health Minister Emma Davidson said the new location would be better suited for the delivery of outpatient mental health services, offer increased client amenities, have better accessibility and improve safety for both clients and staff.
“CAMHS Southside has been operating from Callam Offices in Woden since the early 2000s, providing critical mental health assessments and treatments to our women, children and young people,” she said.
“While it is a historically significant building, it is no longer reflective of a best-practice clinical setting for our team of psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, nurses and psychiatrists, or the people they care for.”
The new accommodation will be close to amenities, public transport and public parking, which in turn aims to make the service more accessible.
“It will also have increased floor space, improved staff workstation configurations, and provide child and youth-friendly clinical spaces for sensitive communications and therapy with at-risk clients, including new and expectant mums,” Ms Davidson said.
CAMHS Southside will relocate to Bowes Place early next year once works on the new facility are complete.
The ACT’s CAMHS centres operate Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. To make an appointment or receive more information, call CAMHS Northside (02 5124 1407) or CAMHS Southside (02 5124 3133). Details of support will be determined with the CAMHS team based on your situation.
