Crikey! Christian needs to get out

By Kerces - 6 September 2006 5

From Christian Kerr in today’s Crikey:

New terror threat in Canberra. “Caution! Swooping bird,” warn signs on one of the House of Representatives courtyards.

Oh boy Christian. You really should get out of Parliament House occasionally on your rare visits to our fair and magpie-populated city. Then you might discover that these signs are not at all uncommon and magpie swooping is a problem we actual residents have to put up with every year.

I’m surprise the fat maggies of the big house would dare swoop the nice people who feed them when they can just menace them from the other side of the outdoor tables.

What’s Your opinion?

Many years ago in Kambah a kid lost an eye to a magpie in swooping season, so they can be quite dangerous.

I got dive bombed once whilst playing cricket. After that no-one wanted to field at deep mid wicket.

In fact, no-one wanted to chase the ball there either.

In the end we sent a guy out to the boundary wearing a batting helmet but the bird was persistant if anything and it took him a good thirty or so minutes to work out that he couldn’t peck the hell out of a helmet so he decided to retreat to a nearby gum and watch proceeding s instead….

Yes, Christian, that one-liner in Crikey! was a huge fuss indeed.

Well then you should know better than to make a huge fuss of a common occurence.

Kerces! Really! I grew up next to the dreaded maggies of Victoria Park Racecourse in Adelaide. Tony Blair saw fit to warn the inhabitants of Parliament House about them when he address us back in March: “I remember… being chased by magpies as I ran across the open ground near our home – early training for later skirmishes with the media.”
