So it’s a long weekend and we all know that means a whole extra night to go out and have fun.

What’s on your radar this week to celebrate Her Majesty’s birthday?

(And please, no debates on the merit of fireworks. If you want to do that, go look here)

OK…one of the few bands I rate in Canberra [Painted Hearts] are playing at The Front [near Tilleys]

It starts at 8 doesn’t cost much to get in at the door…and if I like the look of you [or aren’t in a snit with you] even less.

This may constitute some form of solace for missing out on one of the hottest gigs that many missed out on last Wednesday with Maurice Frawley and the Yardhands….Blair and band [Wedded bliss] were on fire to start off…and i was very proud of them…when Marcus asks me to find a place to play for one of his bands Blair is the obvious choice for local product coz they sound so good, and don’t make me cringe with shame the way the majority of local no-talents do…someone I know said it best…you could find most of these players in a competent suburban wedding band….ain’t that the truth.

Maurice and a couple of the Yardhands made comments as to how good Blair and the Bliss were and there seemed to be some sort of luuurrrrv thing between Maurice and Phil from the Bliss…asking Phil to play banjo impromptu on a song or so, and I think their pedal steel player Garrett Costigan [turns out to be a bit of a Melbourne] will be back to play on Blair’s new CD…so the networking went fine and the after gig party/jam at my place went on until 6AM…think Maurice missed his radio interview on 2 SER coz he’d only left my place 1/2 hour before he was due. But hell we had a great night…and they’re all such nice guys for semi legends [compared with the head up ass local nudniks who think because they’re in a nowheresville band they’re hot sh*t] …just run a google search on where some of these guys have played…these guys were REAL alt.country legends …not the ones playing for free at another venue around town…they can’t be alt.country legends if I haven’t heard of them…like were they at Harvet Fest or anything

…Maurice and the Yardhands will be back and this time we’ll get the attendances better…we’re working on it…I’m still learning this biz…and I learned a bit more about Canberra from this little foray…most of it not very nice…and from people I didn’t expect. Oh well…humanity…the scourge of this planet…maybe you’ll see them next time we get them up here…I’m already scheming on how to make this work better…and to paraphrase David McComb…workout which souls go/stay on my fiery list.

Painted Hearts tonight [9th] @ The Front in Lyneham

Anyways maybe see you at The Painted Hearts gig tonight…remember that it’s byo because of the licensing laws….but the Lyneham IGA is just around the corner.

if anyone hasn’t seen local band looking glass… I highly reccomend them…. they do what wolfmother do but do it well, ie they aren’t ripping off 70’s bands but moreover are engaging their influences and applying it to their own sound.. if that makes sense… in simple terms they are bloody good

If i wasn’t otherwise occupied, i’d be doing the following:

Fri: Red Menace, Penguin, Spoil and Schlauncher @ Pete’s in Belconnen

Sat: Looking Glass, The Fumes and Wallspace @ The Greenroom.

spoil. word

The fumes at greenroom on saturday… could be good as well
