With builders booked out for months in advance and tradies so flat out they forget to return your calls – or just don’t turn up – renovating a home in Canberra right now can be a nightmare.
But fixing up that tired bathroom or adding some sparkle to your kitchen can be easy with Blake Harlock-Fletcher on the job.
The project manager transforms daggy interiors into stunning contemporary spaces. And the best part, he does all the hard work for you.
Director of G6 Concepts, Blake saw the need for a specialist home renovation project manager in the Territory and what started out as pretty straight-forward concept has been embraced by home owners all over the city.
“It’s really taken off,” he says.
“We have a niche market, specialising in renovations all throughout Canberra and surrounding regions.”
Blake came up with the concept after constantly hearing people complain about how difficult it was to secure and co-ordinate tradespeople and source building materials.
“Clients were consistently telling me how hard it was to lock in tradespeople, and how they couldn’t get quotes – or the tradies just didn’t turn up at all,” he says.
“I offered to project manage a couple of jobs. The rest is history.”
Blake now meets with home renovators to get an idea of the scope of works required, then oversees the entire project from start to finish.
“The home owners don’t need to worry about anything,” he says.
“We arrange initial meetings with designers, and the clients can come into our showroom so they can see what we can do.
“Once we’ve nutted out the plan and a design, they can sit back while my trades team does the rest.”
Blake will manage the project and coordinate all the contractors required to complete the job – from demolition to ordering and delivery of materials, right through to clean-up and rubbish removal.
“I take all the stress out of renovating,” he says.
“We have an amazing team of tradies and designers that I trust will get the job done right, and on time.
“People don’t need to worry about coordinating different trades to come in and out of their home, and we always turn up when we say we will.”
Blake will launch his second full-time G6 Concepts team in the new year.
While he’s good on the tools, Blake has discovered organisation is where he really shines.
His methods are quite simple. He returns calls within 24 to 48 hours. He visits the site and provides a quote within a week. And his contractors take pride in their work.
“The key is good communication and organisation,” he says.
“We pride ourselves on communication so that our clients have 100 per cent satisfaction. Turning up on time, taking your shoes off and cleaning up after yourself. It’s those little things that have a big impact.”
Blake has taken his renovation service one step further, recently opening his G6 Concepts showroom in Gladstone Street, Fyshwick. The showroom features design “pods” to showcase kitchen, bathroom and laundry layouts and the latest fittings such as frameless shower screens, freestanding baths and a variety of tapware style and colours.
“It can be overwhelming for people when they walk into a tile shop with 50,000 different tiles.
“Our showroom is a good starting point to show off the basic options without overwhelming clients. And they seem to love it.”
During the COVID lockdowns, when the building industry went into overdrive, Blake’s business took off.
“I went from one employee to five employees and 18 contractors.”
His business model will be duplicated when he fires up his second crew and another project manager.
Blake says he’s hand-picked an experienced crew that can do everything from demolition to electrical, flooring, cabinetry, tiling and painting.
“The smile on the client’s face and how happy they are at the end is what counts.”
