Driver arrested trying to leave the country after fatal Cooma crash

The man at the wheel of last weekend’s double fatal car crash near Cooma has been arrested trying to leave the country.

Just before 4:00 am last Sunday (July 28) emergency services were called to the Monaro Highway, near Rose Valley Road, Bunyan, about 10km north of Cooma, after a Mazda 6 sedan travelling south left the road and rolled.

Two passengers in the vehicle died at the scene, including the 21-year-old male front seat passenger, and the 22-year-old female rear seat passenger.

“The driver, a 22-year-old man, suffered a serious head laceration and two male passengers, aged 19 and 20, suffered superficial head lacerations,” police report.

“Officers from the Lake Illawarra Crash Investigation Unit commenced inquiries.

“About 7:00 pm yesterday (August 2), the 22-year-old male driver was arrested at Sydney Airport as he was attempting to board a flight out of the country.

“The man, a Nepalese National, was taken to Mascot Police Station and charged with dangerous driving occasioning death (x2), dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, cause bodily harm by misconduct (x2), negligent driving occasioning death, and negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm,” police say.

The man was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court today (August 3).
