Canberra Symphony Orchestra presents Australian Series: Close to Air on the 27 July. Image: Canberra Symphony Orchestra.
This program presents the Australian premiere of composer Simon James Phillips’ Perto Do Ar (Close to Air), an immersive, 50-minute work for brass quintet.
Trained as a classical pianist, Phillips is a musical polymath: his creative work spans experimental, classical, electronic and improvised music.
Perto Do Ar explores an expansive sonic and spatial landscape, rich in complex overtones and luminous sound colour.
This thrilling work demands a highly resonant acoustic; at particular points, the players are directed to move around the audience and the performance space. Premiered in Lisbon’s resonant Panteão Nacional (National Pantheon), this piece will take on an exciting, new form as our musicians make use of the spacious Gandel Atrium at the National Museum of Australia.
