The rhythms of the natural world have long been a source of inspiration and solace. This program ventures into the heart of the forest, wandering unhurried through verdant, expansive landscapes.
We begin In Nature’s Realm, where Dvořák frequently withdrew for restful solitude. Originally part of a set titled Nature, Life and Love, some liken this earnest orchestral overture to a landscape painting, while others hear a tender portrait of the Czech composer’s homeland.
So too did Strauss find a soothing balm in nature. Composed in the final year of his life, his Four Last Songs contemplate the mystery of nature’s seasons, colours and rhythms.
Louisa Trewartha explores the otherworldliness of the forest in a new CSO commission. An exciting emerging composer and trumpet player, Trewartha responds to the ‘magic secrets’ of Sibelius’ fantastical tone poems.
The program culminates in a performance of Sibelius’ Seventh Symphony, an exhilarating emotional and sonic journey in a single, seamless movement. In a tribute to this man of the forest, we close with the Karelia Suite—one of Sibelius’ best-loved works.
