For more than three decades, Germany’s Freiburg Baroque Orchestra has been one of the world’s leading period ensembles. Performing over 100 concerts a year across the globe, they now make their highly anticipated Canberra debut, bringing to life some of Mozart’s greatest and most beloved works. With Australian-born keyboard virtuoso Kristian Bezuidenhout as soloist, this promises to be an unforgettable evening of artistry, elegance, and historical authenticity.

The program opens with J.C. Bach’s Symphony No. 6, a work brimming with drama and energy, composed by the youngest son of the great J.S. Bach. This exhilarating piece sets the stage for a night of exceptional music.

Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 9 in E-flat major, “Jeunehomme”, follows – a concerto of remarkable depth, wit, and innovation. Written in 1777, it was among Mozart’s first to be composed for public performance rather than the court, marking a turning point in the evolution of the piano concerto. With its dazzling interplay between soloist and orchestra, the piece foreshadows the transformation of the genre that would influence Beethoven and generations to come.

Taking center stage next is Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Major, performed by Freiburg Baroque Orchestra’s legendary leader of 30 years, Gottfried von der Goltz. This concerto, renowned for its elegance, lyricism, and unexpected moments of daring invention, is a cornerstone of the violin repertoire, showcasing Mozart’s gift for melodic brilliance and emotional nuance.

The evening concludes with the Symphony No. 40 in G minor, one of Mozart’s most iconic and deeply expressive works. From its restless opening to it’s stormy finale, this symphony is a testament to Mozart’s genius, capturing the full spectrum of human emotion with unparalleled intensity and grace.

With period instruments, historically informed interpretation, and a cast of extraordinary musicians, this performance offers a rare opportunity to experience Mozart’s music in its purest and most authentic form.

This is a concert not to be missed.
