This gripping martial arts epic portrays a young woman trained as an assassin and assigned a near-impossible task. Set in Tang dynasty China, The Assassin follows Nie Yinniang’s journey, from a childhood spent honing her skills under watchful eye to a fateful collision of love and duty.

A newcomer to the wuxia genre, director Hou Hsiao-Hsien delivers a stunning piece of period cinema.

‘Hou’s breathtaking film is a beautiful mystery, matchlessly skilful, yet still hostage to human sentiments – and all the better for it’ – The Guardian
