An 11-year-old girl and a 48-year-old man have drowned this afternoon in the Murrumbidgee at Paddys River.

According to Detective Acting Inspector Simon Coady, at about 2:20 pm today (19 December), police, ambulance and fire rescue crews were called to a popular swimming spot in the Murrumbidgee when the father and daughter were seen to be in danger.

Police first recovered the 48-year-old man from the water and brought him to the shore and commenced CPR. ACT Ambulance then took over from police but efforts to revive the man were unsuccessful.

His 11-year-old daughter was located around 200 to 300 metres downriver. CPR was also performed but she was also unable to be revived.

At this stage, police do not believe the deaths are suspicious.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

ACT Policing remind Canberrans to take care when swimming and watch out for each other when in and near the water.
