Police are investigating after a male detainee died at Canberra’s jail on Wednesday (31 July).

ACT Policing said emergency services were called to the Alexander Maconochie Centre at around 11 am over reports of an unconscious man at the facility.

Staff from ACT Corrections and paramedics treated the 35-year-old, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident, and a report will be prepared for the coroner,” a police spokesperson said.

An ACT Government spokesperson said corrections officers provided first aid and paramedics attended when the man became unwell, but he was unable to be revived.

“We acknowledge the grief of the deceased’s parents and family, friends and loved ones, and extend our sincere condolences to them,” the government spokesperson said.

“ACT Policing have informed next of kin and are investigating the incident as all deaths in custody are subject to a coronial inquest.

“As this matter is subject to ongoing investigation, it would not be appropriate to comment further.”

Justin James Cordy, 34, died at the jail on 26 February 2023 after being remanded into custody just a day earlier.

A coronial inquest into his death began earlier this month.
