The Adelaide-based Hardy Wine Company has decided to sell the Kamberra winery after only eight years’ trade.

The ABC reports Hardy managing director David Woods as saying local viticulturists need not worry as the winery will meet its contractually obligations to them.

The company is restructuring and want to sell the Kamberra winery to a smaller owner. It has not found a buyer yet.

UPDATE The Canberra Times has picked up the story with some reactions from the various members of the winemaking industry.

they want to sell, although a buyer is yet to be found. Yet every year Helm gets his mug on the telly telling us “It’s the best season ever!”
Alot of local vineyards have been sold or are up foor sale over the last few years. With the exception of Tim Kirk at Clonakilla the success of the Canberra wine “industry” has been pretty dissmal.

Is it to be the new Summer Nits HQ?

One wonders how it would travel as a co-op type set-up?

Bah – i like my reds – but dunno crap about making wine.

Wolf Blass yellow label Cab sav = the shit

Would a large company want to sell a business that’s profitable and well sorted? Maybe, if the price was right, but I wouldn’t put my own $$ into it.

Dunno if the Canberra climate is too conducive to Cab savs and Merlots, Danman. Cool climate Rieslings all the way here.

Lucky I checked the site before posting this – Kerces beat me to it.

Hopefully a small(er) time operator will slot in and make more quality canberra region cab savs and merlots.

Someone who became extremely wealthy advisong people on how to set up their own winery once told me – if you want to be assured of making a small fortune in the wine business – you should start with a big fortune…
