Forced enthusiasm not seen since the Nuremburg Rallies in Civic Square

civic square olympic rally

A strange variant of the chugger has been haunting Garema Place and Civic Square this lunchtime, exhorting passers by to care about the Olympic Homecoming.

High pitched squeals and the booming Flashdance (old model) soundtrack were coming from Civic Square.

And yes there it was. Flags and blue wigs (why blue?) handed out to all who’d have them and the kids from the six schools willing to have their students used as a cheap backdrop to the greater glory of the faltering Australian Olympic Committee and Katy Gallagher.

With my manipulation filters triggering actual physical nausea I beat a hasty retreat.

The kids who got to skip some school and see some people they’d seen on TV will no doubt be thrilled.

No wonder the enthusiasm was forced. This was one of the worst Olympic performances in history. A measly seven gold medals and only one in swimming. I purposely boycotted this ceremony because I do not believe in lauding mediocrity.

I’ve seen bigger crowds at a Cosmos game.

Post etc kinda hints at why most people think Canberra sucks… we could probably lighten up a bit, or at least not be negative about it (even saying nothing would be better than the standard negativity)?Chin up, life will go on after all the parade is over…. 🙂

And the reference to the Nuremburg rallies is not even accurate. The enthusiasm wasn’t forced. Unfortunately It was all too real.

There was an olympics?

Go for it JB. I particularly like the bit about the “faltering” olympic committee.

Thanks jb generally agree with you views BUT the all schools band spent a few months prepping for the performance which those that stayed enjoyed. The commercial bits were a bit over the top by all accounts . I agree with dpm that if you can’t be positive about a welcome home celebration for those locals that have put such a huge effort in to do their best, perhaps say nothing.

wow! The realism in those Palace Guard uniforms are insane – they must been flown in from London. * cringe – (photo) http://yfrog.com/z/kjrtszsj

Blue wigs of course – nothing more Australian!
