Free Comic Books

By Bazza - 21 February 2008 9

Just though I would give you all heaps of warning, that the best time of year to get Comic Books is coming again.

Saturday 3rd May is Free Comic Book Day. A single day when participating comic book shops around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their stores, with no purchase required. Yep, thats right. Everyone gets a free comic book.

My favourite Canberra store has put images of this years comics and details here.

Last year there was even an apperance by members of the 501st Star Wars Garrison. I made sure I got photos of my kids with the Stormtrooper, to infect them with my geekdom.

You’re not talking about when Impact used to be Central Station Records are you, ant?

I don’t think Impact was ever Central, was it? I remember there was UMM records for a while, downstairs from Community aid abroad. And Central Station was upstairs from the interchange newsagent.

Blake at HoH isn’t your standard conforms-to-stereotype Comic Book Guy
He also recognises that people have different views on comics and those portrayed within…

I think he has a wife(!), not sourced from the internet(!!!), and possibly also a chld or children (?!?).

And the service at HOH is good enough so that when non-comic affiliated humans try to buy comic-related things for comic-enthusiasts, they don’t feel like they’ve just been enthusiastically violated or ripped off.

The thing that is awesome about Dee’s and House of Heroes is the SERVICE. Something that is very lacking in most comic book stores. With Internet comic stores, you don’t need to put is with the pain of bad service anymore. With those shops that are more like a secret club around, no wonder the average punter things all comic book employees are like ‘the comic book guy’ on the Simpsons.

Impact was such a resource when it was in the Boulevarde. I got my first punk record imports there, and later on Cerebus books and t-shirts…

They did get very expensive didn’t they. I think they are even more expensive then King’s now, and that is saying something.
I still like the one in Woden best. I get most of my new releases for about $4.50.

Impact Records is very much missed. JB is just pure commercialism. I used to go to Impact Records very frequently. JB, I never go there now. Unless I want to get a DVD. I can go to any of the JB stores for DVD’s. I can even go to K-Mart, Target, Big-W or ..(you get the idea).I hate the Civic JB store! Lame.

On the subject of comics, anyone been to Impact Comics since it moved? I went in there for the first time on the weekend… not a fan at all, to be honest. It reminds me of Kings Comics in Sydney, but with even larger markups. I miss Impact Records…
