Get on down to StarTrack Oval Canberra?

By johnboy - 12 April 2013 15

The Canberra Times has the highly irritating news that the GWS Giants have sold the naming rights to Manuka Oval for their games to Star Track:

The historic sports ground may be owned by the ACT government, but the Giants have negotiated a sponsorship deal with logistics company StarTrack that will see the oval renamed StarTrack Oval Canberra for the duration of the football season over the next two years, with the football club pocketing the proceeds.

The agreement includes naming rights for StarTrack for all Aussie rules matches, including the NAB Cup, Foxtel Cup, and all NEAFL games, as well as year-round signage.

The Giants will be playing the first ever premiership AFL match under lights at Manuka, taking on St Kilda on Saturday evening.

Apparently efforts to flog off the naming rights to Canberra Stadium are ongoing, but they’ve been asking too much.

What’s Your opinion?

Startrack is Aussie Post +QANTAS.

Wrong. Australian Air Express is Australia Post + QANTAS. Australian Airlines was taken over by QANTAS in the 1980s and Aussie Post came on board later during – or possibly after – the X-rated video boom of the 1980s and early ’90s. AAE was the favoured courier company by mos
t adult retailers. Star Track Express is owned by Australia Post alone as is Australia Post Courier (natch).

Yes. You’re right.
Getting my customers mixed up!

Whilst you are right, you do realise that the split of Australian Air Express and Star Track is only very recent, like in the last 6 months? Prior to that both were owned by Qantas and Aus Post.

If I won lotto, I’d buy the naming rights to Canberra Stadium and change it back to Bruce Stadium. Alternatively I’d also contribute funds to a bigger pool of cash for this to happen…

You’ll enjoy this then…

Let me get this right, we pay GWS to play in Canberra.
Then GWS sell the naming rights to Canberra’s Manuka Stadium.

GWS has taken the ACT government as suckers!

Not to mention ACT ratepayers. This stinks to high heaven.

Is this the same company that runs Star Track Couriers, formerly known as Discount Freight Express? If so, it is now owned by Australia Post. Is it appropriate for a government agency to spend money on this sort of thing?

Actually Australia Post is a government owned corporation, not agency. One key difference is the income they generate they get first dibs on for re-investment to grow the company, unlike a Government agency that generally sends all income to consolidated revenue.

One other major difference is they and their subsidiary companies, such as Star Track compete in an open market, so do need to advertise to sell their wares.

So no it isn’t inappropriate for a government business to advertise.

I understand the govt kicks in to have gws play at manuka. How much more cash can they take out of Canberra. If they get naming rights they should be charged for use and lose the subsidy which is the only real reason they come here to play.

You do realise that giving them the naming rights allows the government to pay less cash, right? And that StarTrack’s money was never in Canberra to start with?

Why do gws get the money, I believed that the ACT taxpayer paid for the oval upkeep largely. I understand the govt kicks in to have gws play at manuka. How much more cash can they take out of Canberra. If they get naming rights they should be charged for use and lose the subsidy which is the only real reason they come here to play. Andrew Barrbwith more decisions that seem based on his longing to be in the popular cool crowd

Never really bothers me when it comes to naming rights for Stadiums. It’s all for TV & advertising. The general public will still refer to it as Manuka oval, just like they’ll always refer to Canberra/Bruce stadium.

Maybe Star Track can beam in some meat pies with their transporter beam!
