The Canberra Times has the highly irritating news that the GWS Giants have sold the naming rights to Manuka Oval for their games to Star Track:
The historic sports ground may be owned by the ACT government, but the Giants have negotiated a sponsorship deal with logistics company StarTrack that will see the oval renamed StarTrack Oval Canberra for the duration of the football season over the next two years, with the football club pocketing the proceeds.
The agreement includes naming rights for StarTrack for all Aussie rules matches, including the NAB Cup, Foxtel Cup, and all NEAFL games, as well as year-round signage.
The Giants will be playing the first ever premiership AFL match under lights at Manuka, taking on St Kilda on Saturday evening.
Apparently efforts to flog off the naming rights to Canberra Stadium are ongoing, but they’ve been asking too much.
