It’s time to whip out that pout or pose you’ve been practising in front of the mirror because Canberra’s first selfie museum is nearly here.
The project of local business Curiousfox, the Selfie Museum will be located at 14 Purdue Street in Belconnen, and it aims to satisfy the more adventurous self-photographers of the ACT.
Aiming to open at the end of January, organisers say the idea is inspired by similar projects around Australia and the world.
“I’ve seen them popping up around the place,” said a spokesperson for Curiousfox.
“In America, there are heaps of them popping up, and Australia has had a couple of them with Sugar Republic.
“It just seemed like a really cool, creative project to do, and I was sort of in-between projects and it sounded like fun so I thought why not give it a try.
“A lot of the designs are inspired by other selfie museums and things that are on the internet and popular at the moment.
“I have some original ideas, but they’re more complicated projects that might be coming in the future.”
Extended delays have placed a significant burden on operations since the first steps were taken towards the project 12 months ago. A frustrating process at times, Curiousfox is now just hoping the community will embrace it.
“If it breaks even, I’m happy,” said the spokesperson.
“It’s fun to do, and as long as we’re not losing money, it’s great.”
However, news of a Selfie Museum in the ACT hasn’t come without critics and scepticism. Organisers remain unfazed by some of the negative feedback.
“There are people from the older generation who think it’s all dumb, and just think that millennials are glued to their phones,” said the spokesperson.
“I guess I would say to them that a photo can last a lifetime, and it’s not new to have nice photos.”
The Selfie Museum plans to be open from Wednesdays to Sundays, and after hours from Wednesdays to Fridays, and all day on Saturdays and Sundays.
Customers will book in for an hour-long session, where they will be able to take as many photos as they like at each of the different sets on display.
The price for a regular session is $35 per person. Gift vouchers are already available on the Selfie Museum website.
