A high school student has died after an accident at Mount Ainslie on Thursday morning (18 October).

Around 11:20 am, emergency services and park rangers were called to the scene and closed the southern end of the summit trail while the incident was examined.

It is believed the incident involved a Year 10 boy from Campbell High during a school excursion, who suffered a head injury and was taken to Canberra Hospital.

Around 8 pm, ACT Education Minister Yvette Berry revealed the boy had passed away.

“I am deeply saddened by this terrible accident and express my utmost sympathies to the family, friends and loved ones of this young person, and the school community,” she said in a statement.

“The ACT Government will support the family and the school in any way it can. I encourage everyone to be sensitive to the family and the school community during this difficult time.”

Ms Berry said the school community had been notified and counselling and support is being provided to students, staff and their families.

ACT Policing are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
