Home Insurance payout, go to Vegas?

By Captain RAAF - 15 February 2011 16

Recent Hail storm at the Chateau De Raaf has left me with a decision I have no experience in making.

The Insurance company has told me the quote comes to $47,000 and that they don’t care what I do with the money if I opt for a cash settlement. So what happens if I grab the cash and don’t fix the damage or if I just decide to fix what I think needs fixing?

Am I screwed when the next big hail storm comes down, will they want to see receipts if I do ‘say’ i’ll get someone else to fix it?

Or should I just take Missus RAAF to Vegas and blow it all on strippers and booze?

What’s Your opinion?

Actually, why not just get the missus to dance around the loungeroom getting her gear off while you drink a couple of VBs?

But that would be no different to a Friday night or when it’s my birthday!

Go to Vegas – but during a Red Flag exercise.

Post photos on here.

I would seriously question going to Vegas, as it is quite obvious you have used up all your luck already… an Insurance Company has agreed to a payout!

Read your policy. It will almost certainly have a clause stating that they will not cover damage caused by defects to the house that you knew about but did not make reasonable attempt to fix.

totally agree. get all the fine print on the PDS (product disclosure statement)

I wonder how they got that figure? is that just the cost of a builder to repair the damage?

At the very least, if you fix the place yourself, take photos of the fixed issues to prove that they were replaced.

RE (personal) property damage, we didnt replace some of the stuff when we got burgled. We had a cash settlement based on the items taken. Kinda won/lost in different areas on that one.

There’s a very obvious and real question that has to be asked.

Why the **** would you take the missus to Vegas??

Or why go to Vegas at all? Have you ever been there, the best part of Vegas was leaving that craphole! Go to the Netherlands if you want coke, booze and hookers.

Jokes aside, I really enjoyed Vegas. Especially the older part down at Fremont Street.

Be a man and make the decision. Ditch the wife and Vegas. Head for South America and live it up for a year.

Spend $27000 on reapiars and the rest on a holiday!

I’ll be interested in responses to this. I had a guy drive into my house and garage on Australia Day damaging the building, driveway, garage doors, outdoor lighting, mowing down two trees and several shrubs, not taking account of what he did to my neighbour’s front garden. I am still waiting for the insurance company to make a decision and they keep telling me its the Queensland situation keeping them busy. There seems to be quite some disagreement about what’s covered and two assessors have been with quite different opinions. No building quotes done yet but if I were offered the ‘cash and fix it yourself’ option, I’d be considering it just to move things along. I’m not feeling lucky!

You should diversify – strippers, booze and coke…

Knowing insurance companies, they will try and screw you over completely if you didn’t go with their recommended repair options and then the house ended up getting hail damaged again.

Blow it all and then come back and tell us all about it – much more fun that fixing stuff 🙂
