Images of Canberra – Cameron offices coming down

By johnboy - 13 October 2006 8

Bonfire’s ongoing fascination with the Cameron Offices continues with this shot of four diggers hard at work tearing down the award winning architecture.

i’ll tell you now, that a lot of dirt from brindbella park is being carted out past pialligo… i know this, because I watch it for at least an hour a day.

What idiot gave that shocker a prize?

Yes, industrial concrete waste goes to the special dump on the Molonglo, opposite the entrance to Fairbairn and the current struggling arboretum.

Industrial waste and demolition rubble dump – out on Piallago Avenue – pretty much opposite old dragway site.

At least thats where they took the rubble for Old Canberra hospital ( PS Thumper – that was haunted too – I have many 1st hand accounts if you need them I can hook you up).

I only know this because I got a brick from the site for home – but I left it at an old rental 🙂

Probably to the GDE, to be then trucked to the arboretum.

Or was it the other way around?

Man, I need a beer…

Thanks johnboy.

My email with the photos read:

A nice shot of three steamshovels working in unison to rip down, remove and reduce the concrete structure to
its component parts of man made sedimentary rock
rubble and reinforcing steel.

This is taking place inside the building.

Due to its design, the pillars and concrete beams
which hang between the seperate buildings above the gardens, provide support to the large open area concrete structures.

Remove these supports and the building is weakened.

Photo two

Remnants of one of the floors hanging down can be seen to the right in this photo. The external walls are still up.

There is an enormous volume of rubble being
carted away.

Does anyone know where its gone ?

Thumper 3:41 pm 13 Oct 06

Are they going to keep at least one of the buildings?

If only to show the folly of 1970s architecture.

I hope so.
