Jane Cadzow on Audrey Fagan

There’s a really good piece by Jane Cadzow in the Good Weekend in today’s SMH about Audrey Fagan’s death and looking at the events surrounding it. I would strongly recommend it (unfortunately they don’t put the GW stuff online so you’ll have to buy the paper).

Mick knows he was guilty of professional misjudgment when he promoted someone with a cloud over her. He ought not have. His judgment failed him (again). PS: Don’t mention the implicit; rorting of AFP maintenance contracts. Ssssshhhhhh!

Sarix: I have found that Glover columns which do not mention his (*****) family are usually excellent.

I find GW, as I said, and the glossy SMH and FR supplements, a waste of time (I should qualify that – I like to read, in GW, Wajnryb and Ritchie (who manages to entertain even when writing about TV programmes I have not seen).

Interesting about the two notes – I hope that sad lady will, at least, have her parting words heard.

Kenk, GW isn’t a waste of time (though nothing compared to its international weekly wrap mag rivals.) Two things: the GW article mentioned that Fagan left TWO notes, one for her partner and one for her daughter. Also Richard Glover is indeed in Spectrum and pretty much every damn article he publishes has a rash of Jocasta and Batboy, like a mild form of Tourette’s. I suggest you’re paying too much attention to Glover and not enough to GW…

Although their fashion/lifestyle is admittedly a wank and Maggie Alderton should be shot.

I found the portrayal of Waterford interesting. Rather more sympathetic than I expected. On the other hand the media has a vested interest in protecting media freedom of speech.

Being charged over inappropriate conduct regarding building contractors and cheap prices might though.

Blame it on Eastman.

Yep, agree, Shauno. There’s depression, but somehow this picture doesn’t fit. I want to know more. Smacks of desperation and despair to me… but not the depressive sort.

Mrs. Fagin is reported to have left a note which, presumably, will become public at the inquest. The GW article was, like most GW articles (except, sometimes, Richard Glove (no – he is in Spectrum not GW and, as soon as he mentions batboy or ramona I stop reading…) a waste of time.

Its a very strange thing to happen. Sure you get suicides from time to time in public life but very rarely some one that has reached the pinnacle of their career. And to leave behind a young daughter is even more tragic. There had to be some compelling reason for her to take such actions and being such a public figure in an important job the public really should be told.

It’s well-researched and well-written, and shows the perspectives of those around her such as Keelty, Waterford and Stanhope… but I didn’t actually find it very informative. The article aims to answer “Why did Audrey Fagan, chief of the national capital’s police force, decide to end her life?”, but doesn’t offer a real insight into the reasons for her suicide in my opinion.

It’s in Good Weekend which is only available when you buy the paper according to SMH site.

If anyone picked it up, a scan would be great 🙂

Yeah, I was O/S too at the time, but got the reports on the SMH online (no point reading the CT online). I’ll swipe GW. It’s weird it’s not online though, as all their other features thingys are, like fashion and stuff.

I have not read the article but I was aware that one was coming, and that would not necessarily portray the AFP Commissioner in a good light. I had heard that there had been a ‘screaming match’ between the two before her suicide.

Care to give a rundown?
