Six leading ACT community organisations have combined to provide a day of celebration in Woden for NAIDOC Week tomorrow (Thursday 9 July).
Building on the national NAIDOC Week theme of We all Stand on Sacred Ground: Learn, Respect & Celebrate, the Woden celebration will focus on Land & Learning.
It will feature:
- Indigenous art workshop, including craft activities for children
- Indigenous music
- Torres Strait Islander food
- A fire truck
- A talk from an Indigenous student studying at UC
- Prominent Indigenous community members talking about connection to country.
The organisations hosting the event are YWCA Canberra, Northside Community Service, Karralika, The Smith Family, Woden Community Service and ACTCOSS. Keith Brandy, a proud Wiradjuri man and Sector Development Officer – Gulanga Program, with ACTCOSS, said the event was an important celebration for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canberrans.
“We are bringing together a great range of activities, from art to music, craft and talks from students and prominent Indigenous community members. This will be a wonderful day of sharing knowledge together, learning about and celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. “We encourage everyone to come along on the day and join in,” Mr Brandy added.
School groups will be attending, as well as Indigenous community members and any other interested community members.
