Library opening hours being cut down

By Barcham - 16 October 2013 3

Some sad news for library fans.

New library opening hours will commence from Monday 2 December 2013, Director, Libraries ACT, Vanessa Little, announced today.

“We’ve had a look at usage patterns across our nine ACT public library branches, as well as the growing use of Libraries ACT’s online resources. The new opening hours will take into account current demand and focus resources in the libraries where they will be most effective,” Ms Little said.

“The three busiest libraries – Dickson, Gungahlin and Woden – will all still open until 8 pm one night a week, while Belconnen, Civic, Erindale, Kingston, Kippax and Tuggeranong will all close at 5.30 pm on weekdays.

“All libraries will close at 4 pm on Saturdays, rather than 5.30 pm. Library hours will remain the same on Sundays. There will be no loss of permanent staff in the changes.

Just curious, who legitimately need to bother more than 50 items at a time, and has the time to use/read/watch all those items in the borrowing time allowed? Serious question….

New changes to the borrowing rules are coming next month – everyone gets fined for overdues now, no exceptions, and the fines start acummulating from the first day overdue. Items are deemed lost and the borrower is billed a month after the due date.

Looks like the powers that be noticed the wait times for reseves blowing out as people hung onto them for months with few consequences. Bit annoying that after the “unlimited” items we could borrow we’re now down to only 50.

So the idiots who walk away from the automatic returns with several items jamming it and an error message on display because they were too lazy to return them one at a time can take note – if you pissed someone off enough to take those items and hang onto them for a few weeks you just might have to pay up for your laziness.
