ACT Chief Police Officer Audrey Fagan has put forward a proposal for teams of police to take ownership of designated areas, thus creating local police forces for each suburb.
The Canberra Times reports Ms Fagan said the proposal would create links between the community and police, with the teams being “a focal point” and officers working with Neighbourhood Watch and Safety House groups in the zones, including by attending meetings.
One wonders what the recent kerfuffle over Neighbourhood Watch publishing police-supplied crime statistics will do for community cooperation with these plans. That said, both the president of Neighbourhood Watch and president of ACT Safety House said they thought the proposal sounded like a good idea but they would need to see more details.
Police Minister Simon “Doesn’t Answer RA Questions” Corbell has backed the proposal, saying, “It’s all part of reaching out to the community and making sure police are aware of what is going on in each neighbourhood. It also helps them in joining dots together in terms of solving crime.”
Apparently a similar system for traffic policing has been in place for more than 12 months, with traffic officers assigned to particular areas around the city.
