Mitchell car yard fire

ACT Fire & Rescue is responding to reports of a fire in Brooks Street Mitchell.

Update to follow.

10:22am Wednesday 17 October 2012

Firefighters have arrived on the scene of a fire at in Brooks Street Mitchell.

The fire is confirmed to be burning in a car yard and associated building.

Three fire pumpers are currently working to bring the fire under control.

10:31am Wednesday 17 October 2012

The fire has been extinguished.

A three bay metal garage structure and a number of vehicles have been severely damaged.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage but will be investigated.

ACT Fire & Rescue received multiple emergency triple zero (000) calls about the fire, the first at 10:13am.

The ACT Ambulance Service has treated one male patient on scene for minor burns to one hand and transported to The Canberra Hospital in a stable condition.

Firefighters are now working to clean up a small oil run off on the site.

The initial damage bill has been estimated at $50,000.

ACT Workcover has been notified.

Mechanic down the street reckons the guy was using an electric drill to drill a hole in the bottom of the fuel tank to drain it. When the fuel poured over the 240v drill it all went up.

Probably the best outcome for the individual involved because presumably after he did whatever he was doing he was going to weld it back up again, which would have been much more spectacular.
