The National Library underpaid 106 current and former employees a total of $245,000 in wages and superannuation over the last two decades, the Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) has reported.

The underpayment was self-reported to the Ombudsmen earlier this year after an internal payroll audit found that the Library had failed to pay casual employees the correct weekend and public holiday penalty rates.

Underpayments ranged from $12 to just under $20,000, with 11 employees being underpaid more than $5,000.

The Library has entered into an Enforceable Undertaking with the FWO to pay back employees within 90 days, plus 4.75 per cent interest.

An independent auditor will also need to commence an investigation by 1 February 2021 and submit a draft report to the FWO by 15 April 2021.
