National Mountain Bike Champs 2007 Wrap

This weekend Canberra staged the mountain bike national championships at the new Stromlo Forest Park. Although it didn’t rain gold (and jerseys) for all of our local riders, praise for the trails and facilities rained from all those who attended. As far as I know, the only rider from the ACT to score gold was Caroline Buchanan who took out the Elite Womens Mountain Cross.

Luckily the recent heat wave eased off over the weekend and most of the riders and specatators were able to withstand the lack of shade at the recently replanted Stromlo. Unfortunately the wind was present most of the weekend, so there was lots of dust and the main feature jump on the downhill course, a very large step down jump, had to be closed for the event as a number of riders were nearly blown away attempting the jump during practice on Thursday.

Here’s a few of my selected selected photos from the weekend…

One man’s mine site is another man’s (or child’s) playground.

BTW – it was only a short while ago that the whole area was one big pile of ash. So give it a few years (or hopefully less – with the water from the treatment plant which is being pumped over the mountain) and we will have a forest again.

Where? looks like a mine sight
