New culinary delight for Gungahlin

I see that a development application has been lodged for a second McDonald’s Restaurant in Gungahlin.

This second franchise is planned for O’Hanlon Place, Nicholls, opposite (or perhaps adjacent to) the Caltex Service Station there.

So the Golden Arches will basically be the first thing people will see as they enter Canberra along the Barton Highway – especially at night as they will be illuminated of course.

I wonder what the owners of the current eateries at Gold Creek – such as the George Harcourt Inn and Adore Tea House and Cafe Injoy – think about this? Could be good for Gold Creek as a destination for visitors, or not….

There was a winery mooted for this location (or very close to it) at one stage a few years ago – with vines to be planted there on the corner of Curran Drive and O’Hanlon Place. A shame that didn’t get up!

so, you have no sense of place – you’re happy for visitors to associate ‘mcdonalds junk food’ with their first impression/sight of this city? i care.

Well, at the moment its a Caltex service station on the Barton Hwy and a BP on the Fed. Worse, if you approach from the south all you see is suburbia. A Maccas might actually liven things up a bit.

If not, hopefully tourists will be too busy sooking about seeing a Maccas as their first Canberran sight that they won’t notice that f@#king sculpture at the GDE.

Anyway, the first sight of Canberra on the Barton Hwy comes between here and Murrumbateman on the rise after the Tallawong Rd/Anchow Hill Rd intersection when you first see Black Mountain and the tower.

That is a real shame, that area used to be a nice little classy different place to go, no longer.

It’s going to be right next door to the petrol station, it can’t have been that classy.

More jobs for kiddies in Gungahlin, and something that might be open after 6pm at Gold Creek.

Is it really such a horrendous concept that another Macca is going in (and at least 500m from the nearest residence in Nicholls?)

People already think of Canberra as “the politicians place” before even coming here. Afterwards, they think “the politicians place with roundabouts”. I doubt a McDonalds is going to change the opinions of Canberra for anyone, because everybody already has a bad one (who hasn’t said they’re from Canberra and had someone say “I’m sorry”?).

But what a shame it can’t be some iconic Australian eatery (or at least Australian-sounding eatery) that greets people as they enter the capital of Australia on the Barton Highway!

Perhaps it should be a Kingsley’s Gourmet Chicken – at least that is home grown (and has awesome chips – and not woosee french fries)!!

I’m pretty sure that Maccas is ubiquitous enough nowadays that nobody will even notice.

I mean, really – what kind of person thinks “OMG they have fast food restaurants on the highway – what a dive!”

Admittedly I haven’t lived in Nicholls for a few years now, but that Injoy place was a total dive that was best avoided like the plague. Horrible decor, horrible food and horrible service. I’d say Maccas will fit right in, and at least the quality of food and service should actually improve.

The people with very expensive houses which will now overlook a Maccas probably care!

Maybe it’s intended to be a Spite House?

Hooray for ice cream cake and the chance (just maybe) to meet Ronald.

Such a shame that this will be so visible from the highway. After all, the rest of Gunghalin is so scenic

We as a society have become too complacent. Who cares, really? Lots of us care, we just couldn’t be bothered to do anything about it.

What grounds would they have for objecting? Don’t like competition?

Who cares, really?

A McDonalds at that location was on the cards years ago, before the service station went in. I don’t know why it didn’t happen, though. Maybe there were a few objections, or it was just a rumour.

Now that the DA has been lodged, though, there should be the opportunity to do something about it. Object, in writing. And ask others to object as well.
