Nicholls mosque scuttled

I saw a group of 4 muslim women the other day with brown garb (nothing unusual about that) until I noticed the black veils with slits for their eyes. It was very un-Australian I thought.

I wonder how a group of bikini clad Aussie shielas on a Saudi beach would go? Un-Saudi?

Anyhow, now that I have got the Isamlic apologists fuming blue, let me state that there is no concern for Islamic cultural centers where there is good road access and plenty of open land for parking eg Monash – next door to several Bible bashing churches. All we need now to promote peace in the community is to have a Jewish school go in to the area.

Wow, lots of emotional ranting here! Why are people so worried about those who criticise a religious group? As long as it’s done sensibly and with facts in hand, why can’t a sensible debate be had? Maybe we should all take a deep breath…

I would be unsurprised if the Stanhope Labor Government used the excuse of “parking concerns” to scuttle the mosque on dog-whistle, racist actual grounds …

I would appreciate it if you could point me to a single “fact” that was stated. All I see is ill-informed diatribe with no relation to the truth.

Its quite possible that the site really was just unsuitable for the development CMC were considering.
(So CMC may just need to have smaller development plans to suit the site, or a bigger site to suit their requirements)
It is also possible that the roads and nearby area could not handle any development which would attract even a few extra people to the area. (In which case Nicholls was badly planned, and any development should meet with similar resistance from the locals… And thanks to their keenness to complain, should remain fairly underdeveloped)

Its also quite possible that the original poster was honest in their assessment of noise, traffic, and the proposal conditions.
(So should either work for Land Development and put their skills to use for personal gain, or attend the Gungahlin Community Council meeting for public gain, and be as involved in any future development process for the site as they apparently have been in this one)

That ‘impairing the landscape views’, ‘noise issues’ and ‘ local traffic concerns’ have been a code-switch for ‘I dislike the minorities building anything near my house’ in other regions and cities could possibly be entirely coincidental, but if their attentions were only piqued and wanted to put a stop to it because it was being built for Muslims, for their own use, and entirely paid for by the local Muslim ammunity to meet their offer, then thats just either jealousy, spite, or bigotry.

But who are we to mind-read based on a few lines of text in an online forum?

And no, I don’t believe Islam is above criticism or analysis. Nor Catholicism, Scientology, Rastafarianism, Jedi or any other religion for that matter. I just don’t draw the conclusion automatically that a mosque is a bad thing because some followers of Islam are lunatic fundamentalists (or are people who opposed the mosque also botheredby the fact that many followers of Islam are rather inconveniently brown skinned?)

Jeez I’m an idiot. I never knew that democracy, free speech and freedom of conscience and equality were purely Western values. And that these Muso types are obviously against all this. But the problem was the traffic etc at that particular site in Nicholls, not a mosque per se, surely? If the new site is fine, meets all the traffic and other requirements surely you’d have no problems with it being there?

Must be REALLY HARD to find one of the DOZENS of dis-used christian sites.

Re-cycle them.

I love how the Mosque was knocked back due to concerns about parking & traffic issues. So the plan is to now build a bigger mosque.

This post makes absolutely no sense until “Gungahlin or Belconnen Town Centres are more logical sites.”

The decision to build the mosque on that site had not been made in the first place. Hence why the Government made an attempt to consult the community, though they would have been hung if they did with no consultation.

Why feel sorry for them? They are no different to any other developers proposing a significant new development. If they don’t do enough planning as to the adequacy of the development on the site, they are bound to lose money.

Bugger, I thought some of the locals wuld really have appreciated a 100m tall minaret in their midst.

Maybe the CMC can use the space above coles? Heaps of parking under ground and heaps of floor space or they can alway build over in forde.

How is it embarrassing? From the article it appears the proponents made the decision not to go ahead based on legitimate community concerns. Good for them. I hope they are able to find a new site quickly.
