Nicholls mosque scuttled

By welkin31 24 December 2009 38

Always was a poor decision. What a sign of embarrassment by our Green Left bosses to release this on Christmas Eve !!  A rare example of a bad Govt decision being reversed.

Gungahlin or Belconnen Town Centres are more logical sites.

Bigfeet, I thought ‘Muslims followed the ‘Islamic’ religion

bigfeet, if you don’t know the un-Australian practices that Islamists preach (and punish) in the name of Allah, then you are not well read.

Islamists represent the views of a small minority of Muslims, just about the same as Babbar Khalsa represents of Sikhs, or Bajrang Dal represents Hindu. Probably a bit less than the radical Christian Sects like Westboro, KKK or Pastor Danny Naliah represents Christianity as a whole.

And by the way, I am extremely well read in Islam (and other religions). Extremely. More so than most Muslims, Christians and Athiests. If you were, you would know that “Islamists” and Muslims are not the same thing.

Pandy, that should be SOME Islamists.

You don’t think all catholics are paedophiles due to a few bad eggs do you?

Slight point of clarification if I may. You cant be racist for criticizing Islam as its not a race its a religion who’s practices deserve strong condemnation and rightly so. Thank you for your time.

Ah..I was waiting for this one. The old “I’m not a racist, because Islam is not a race” defence.

I deliberately used the word bigot not racist because I knew some intolerant redneck bigot whose only understanding of Islam comes from the Daily Telegraph and Alan Jones would pull this one out as justification for their own prejudices. Thanks for living up to that stereotype.

I note you have not responded to the previous calls for you to point out any “facts” in the statement you defend. Probably because there are none. And in this post, please point out which “practices deserve strong condemnation and rightly so”

It doesn’t matter what you’re allowed to wear in Saudi Arabia, this is Australia and you should be able to wear what ever the hell you like. If you want to dress up in a full burqua, a bikini or as the fairy god mother, you should be able to.

And yet my nazi tee-shirt draws angry looks. Reeeeeeal fair…

Nice idea jasmine. Nothing worse than seeing rural space being wasted on primary production, recreation, reservations or bucolic scenery when it could be turned into multi-story carparking. Might even address the high density parking needs of the RSPCA, Hume, Tralee, or Hall.

I saw a group of 4 muslim women the other day with brown garb (nothing unusual about that) until I noticed the black veils with slits for their eyes. It was very un-Australian I thought.

I wonder how a group of bikini clad Aussie shielas on a Saudi beach would go? Un-Saudi?

A jewish school next to the muslim school should liven up Gungahlin a little.

Don’t underrate the parking issues. Parking in Canberra is a real concern when it comes to high congregation areas. The Muslim Centre at Yarralumla is causing real parking concerns in that area so it is best not to repeat the mistake.

There are plenty of open spaces around Canberra that could entertain a large car park or double storey such as the paddocks around the RSPCA at Weston, Hume or Tralee and Gunghalin outer areas. Or near Hall.

Canberra is pretty secular in my experience and not as racist as the outer regions of Sydney IMO.

Anyhow, now that I have got the Isamlic apologists fuming blue, let me state that there is no concern for Islamic cultural centers where there is good road access and plenty of open land for parking eg Monash – next door to several Bible bashing churches. All we need now to promote peace in the community is to have a Jewish school go in to the area.

Wow, lots of emotional ranting here! Why are people so worried about those who criticise a religious group? As long as it’s done sensibly and with facts in hand, why can’t a sensible debate be had? Maybe we should all take a deep breath…

I-filed 2:22 pm 28 Dec 09

I would be unsurprised if the Stanhope Labor Government used the excuse of “parking concerns” to scuttle the mosque on dog-whistle, racist actual grounds …

I didn’t see any facts. Just wild generalisation and bullsh*t.

I’d rather be a left leaning politically correct Muslim apologist than a right wing neo nazi racist scumbag.

Always brings out the rednecks / bigots. There’s spare land here in Hughes, they’ve got a Christian school around the corner and only occasionally is the parking a problem, mark

I would appreciate it if you could point me to a single “fact” that was stated. All I see is ill-informed diatribe with no relation to the truth.

Skidbladnir 3:57 pm 27 Dec 09

Would you all just calm down, get back to recovering from Christmas in time for New Years, and let the local Muslim population carry on having Ashurah?
Some of you are clearly trolling, others are quickly rising to the bait…

Its quite possible that the site really was just unsuitable for the development CMC were considering.
(So CMC may just need to have smaller development plans to suit the site, or a bigger site to suit their requirements)
It is also possible that the roads and nearby area could not handle any development which would attract even a few extra people to the area. (In which case Nicholls was badly planned, and any development should meet with similar resistance from the locals… And thanks to their keenness to complain, should remain fairly underdeveloped)

Its also quite possible that the original poster was honest in their assessment of noise, traffic, and the proposal conditions.
(So should either work for Land Development and put their skills to use for personal gain, or attend the Gungahlin Community Council meeting for public gain, and be as involved in any future development process for the site as they apparently have been in this one)

That ‘impairing the landscape views’, ‘noise issues’ and ‘ local traffic concerns’ have been a code-switch for ‘I dislike the minorities building anything near my house’ in other regions and cities could possibly be entirely coincidental, but if their attentions were only piqued and wanted to put a stop to it because it was being built for Muslims, for their own use, and entirely paid for by the local Muslim ammunity to meet their offer, then thats just either jealousy, spite, or bigotry.

But who are we to mind-read based on a few lines of text in an online forum?

It’s funny how often opinions are mistaken for facts.

Nothing stated by the above poster was rooted in absolute truth.

Also, reducing your ‘argument’ to blanket labels is weak.

Left wing. Right wing. The plane is going to crash into Alamut sometime.
