Northbourne Ave swerver

By Barcham - 26 July 2013 14

Rik D has sent us another video of some foolish behaviour on the on the road:

This idiot swerves into the car in front of me along Northbourne Ave (southbound) and just misses

July 2013

More and more GoPros are appearing in cars and more and more videos of bad driving are being sent our way, I foresee a future of ‘Monday Bad Driving Videos’.

We’re not quite there yet.

But the Lada Niva WAS an SUV, technically.

Not a very good one, but then Jeeps aren’t very good either, apparently.

Yeah, should have said Samara.

The Lada Niva was a 4wd, like a mini Range Rover. Define “not very good”? It is almost unstoppable off-road, with constant 4wd, low range, and a differential lock.

Not very reliable – but what would you expect of a vehicle with Fiat mechanicals, made in the Soviet Union?

Do I own one? No, I own several.

It still exists in a slightly modernised form in Russia and Europe, and I think Top Gear quite like it.

The Samara was a front wheel drive hatchback.

Anyone who is unable to comprehend why those who have absolutely no need for heavy SUVs and should, therefore,be discouraged by the gummint from owning one by paying much steeper rego/insurance is clearly not capable of seeing the bigger picture and clearly ignorant..

Of course one’s identification with entitlement is quite powerful even if misguided..

I must admit that I would like to see less of these cars on the road except when there is a genuine need for them. They are hard to see around at intersections and it seems many people upsize their own cars in case they ever get hit by these heavier vehicles. And of course many are simply inefficient when not being used for their intended purpose. For example, judging by some of the kitted out and/or immaculate four wheel drives out there they don’t see the bush or do heavy towing more than a handful of times per year – if ever.

The problem is that many people can’t afford to buy, register and insure a second smaller vehicle to use at times when the larger one is not needed. The ideal would be to build sunk costs such as rego and insurance into fuel (and provide some sort of log book rebate for those with a non recreational need for these vehicles) but this will never happen in Oz.

…..and before KB1971 starts jumping up and down about this post, I suspect from other posts that you already do quite a bit to minimise your driving of your assumed great hulking vehicle and that you do use it primarily for its intended purpose. You, therefore, really would not be the sort of driver that I am referring to.

…and for others who think that this train of though is forcing my view on others, it is simply an opinion. I would like to own larger vehicles (motorbikes and cars) but make a personal choice not to for economic and environmental reasons. Others who can (or can’t) afford it, should always be allowed to own these vehicles. (Does my inability to afford such a vehicle mean that someone has already forced their view on me?)

…and I once suggested that increasing the disincentive to drive these larger vehicles might encourage novel ideas such as shared ownership or car hire to suit occasional use. This is not a socialist idea. People already share ownership of planes, houses, horses and even expensive cars and other assets. People are not prevented from sole ownership nor should they ever be.

Now this is yet another reason why I detest the recent phenomenon whereby sooo many sheep, apart from tradies who arguably need them, are acquiring 4WDs/SUVs. ie. they are much heavier than the standard small/medium car and compromise vision. The other more disturbing factor is that any collision involving a SUV and smaller car will obviously impact infinitely more negatively on the occupants of the smaller vehicle.

Those in the gummint who have done little to discourage this idiotic trend need their heads read..

So, move to Russia, have your life controlled & drive a Trabant or a Lada Niva then.

Umm, Russia is no longer a command economy, you know. In fact, if you want to see some really unnerving road action just google “russian dash cams” eg:

I am we’ll award of that but making the suggestion that the government should stop people driving certain cars is pretty well saying that we should live in communist USSR ( or what used to be communist).

Fair dinkum, who the fark is bundah to tell people what they should do with their lives?

Self entitlement right there……. 😉

Well they’ve got to over compensate something. Then they drive like the above driver to show what they are over compensating for.

Really. Since when do you you want the government to start dictating to you what sort of car you should or shouldn’t be driving

Someone on another thread this week questioned who would waste the time recording and uploading footage from these cameras. I haven’t got one but I think they’re great. Apart from possible proof and identification in accidents, uploading this type of footage might make one or two drive a little more responsibly for fear of their poor driving skills going viral.

And it would have to be “Bad Driving Tuesday”. Monday parking will never end.
