Police investigating after driveby shooting in Murrumbateman

Lachlan Roberts 7 August 2019

Police are appealing for information after shots were fired into a Murrambateman house earlier this year, narrowly missing a man who was in the lounge room of his home.

Around 10:30 pm on 12 March, police were called to a home on Jiparu Drive, Murrumbateman, following reports shots had been fired.

A man, believed to be Jason O’Mara, ACT secretary of the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union, his wife and three teenage daughters were at home at the time.

Police said one of the bullets narrowly missed the man while he was in the lounge room of his home.

Shortly after the shots were fired, a vehicle was heard to accelerate harshly from the scene.

Officers from The Hume Police District established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the incident, establishing Strike Force Eager to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The Hume Police District Crime Manager, Detective Chief Inspector Brendan Bernie said police believe it was a targeted attack.

“This is a very serious incident and it was extremely lucky the male occupant of the home wasn’t critically injured or killed,” Chief Inspector  Bernie said.

Police believe the offenders may have conducted surveillance of the premises in the days leading up to the incident and are interested in speaking to the occupants of a white coloured two-door Lexus sedan that was captured on video footage entering the Barton Highway from William Slim Drive, in the ACT.

Police are urging anyone with information about the incident or vehicle to come forward. Information, which can also be provided anonymously, can be referred to Yass Detectives or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Information is treated in strict confidence.
