Police are investigating the murder of a two-year-old girl Safa Annour, who died in April this year as a result of blunt force trauma and internal bleeding.

Around 1:50 pm on 30 April 2018, the toddler was taken to Canberra Hospital where she tragically passed away a short time later, despite attempts to resuscitate her.

Detective Superintendent Scott Muller, who described it as an absolutely horrendous and heartbreaking case, said a post-mortem examination found that Safa died as a result of blunt force trauma and fatal internal bleeding and the injuries were caused by another person.

Police said they have identified two people responsible for Safa’s care during the time she was suspected to have received her fatal injuries, but would not say what relationship those people had with Safa.

Detective Superintendent Moller said no one had been ruled out as suspects at this stage.

“At the time of her death, we made a decision not to release those details to the public,” he said. “Since that time, the investigation has taken us along a line of inquiry and we have decided to release these details.”

Police have revealed they have footage of Safa on the day she died, with Transport Canberra bus footage taken around 8:40 am in Stuart Street, Griffith showing the child uninjured and waving happily to the bus driver.

Detective Superintendent Muller said it what was a heartbreaking and horrendous case for officers and is calling on members of the community to come forward.

“Safa is a beautiful young girl that was part of the Canberra community, and she has tragically died,” he said. “It is absolutely horrendous. Any child in any circumstance that is murdered is absolutely tragic.

“I think that motivates us even more to solve these crimes and our people are working tirelessly to do that. We have a dedicated team of investigators who will be accepting information relating to Safa’s murder directly.”

ACT Policing believes there are people in the community who have information relating to Safa’s murder and are asking anyone with information about the toddler’s death to come forward.
