Police have warned club goers about the dangers of illicit drug use after a weekend operation in the city’s entertainment district resulted in drug seizures and a number of arrests.

ACT Policing said plain-clothed members from the Drugs and Organised Crime Team and Regional Targeting Team patrolled clubs, laneways and carparks in the CBD.

Crime Manager, Detective Sergeant Mark Steel said Operation Ghar focused on disrupting street dealers and resulted in nine seizures of MDMA and 10 seizures of cocaine.

“We want everyone to enjoy themselves without putting themselves at risk with illicit drugs,” said Detective Sergeant Steel.

“Not only is it illegal, but also unsafe. You never know what you are ingesting, and how those chemicals will affect you.”

Detective Sergeant Steel said these operations would be continuing.

“We are encouraging anyone with information regarding drug dealing in the CBD to come forward and speak with police,” he said.

A number of people will be summonsed to appear before the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date on charges including possession, and sale and supply.

Any information about drug dealing in Canberra’s CBD can be reported anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.
