I am looking to get prescribed adhd medication and I don’t want to have to go round to 5 different psychiatrist’s and waste my time finding one that will presribe medication to me.

Does anyone know a psychiatrist that will easily prescribe this kind of medication? Prefferably north canberra.

Mate, if you’re legit, you would already know the process – find a GP, sign the form to get your medical records signed over. Bam. The diagnosis is confirmed, and you don’t look like a drug fiend.

If you’re legit you know the process, which is that your referral gets sent from clinic to clinic, with most of them saying, ‘oh, we don’t deal with that here…’ while in the meantime weeks are passing by with you not getting the help you want, and need.
The OP’s question is valid, I’m dissapoitned with the lack of any actual helpful or positive response.
You guys have no idea.
You are an idiot asking the internet for this info? Isn’t the internet a great resource for informaiton? Isn’t the RiotACT a place to get info on Canberra?
“Any psychiatrist can prescribe medications” is a technically true but grossly innacurate, a psychiatrist will perscribe medications to the people they treat, and all of them may not treat the same dissorders. A physchiatist will not see you for your fungal nail infection and perscribe you the treatment for it. They also may not see you for ADHD if it is not something they wish to deal with.
If you don’t have any idea what you are talking about, don’t bother replying.
Sorry for replying to such an old thread.

(Sorry Bimbogeek – I didn’t actually mean to direct that at you, but at the OP)

I have been prescribed the stuff by a couple of GPs and psychiatrists. If the rules have changed so that only one person in the entire ACTprescribes it now then I can understand the frustration.

If I had just moved here from interstate and was having enough stress getting my family settled in, I probably wouldn’t have all the time in the world to go doctor shopping to fill prescriptions for their/my diagnosed problems.

The wording of the request is a bit suss, sure “I am looking to get prescribed adhd medication” … But that could mean anything so I shall reserve judgement and see if there are any helpful replies from anyone who has successfully navigated this difficult new system.

This is actually an issue in Canberra. My family has to go to Sydney twice a year in order for my son to continue to receive his prescription medication, because no one in Canberra is able to prescribe it to children. So its quite an expensive trip, what with staying over night plus the medical appointment (I’m not up to driving to Sydney and back on the same day). Not sure if its the same for the OP, as the drug is probably different, but dont assume that just because we are living in Canberra that we have access to all the medical care that is needed.

I can probably hazard a guess what medicine it is. Is it for ADHD?

Any psychiatrist can prescribe medications, of course they’ll only do that if they think someone has an actual disorder.

You are an idiot asking the internet for this info first. Secondly there are only a few psychiatrists who have permits to prescribe medicines to treat ADHD. You have zero chance and even less living in Canberra as only one doc has a permit to prescribe them. On top of all that , that doc is heavily monitored by the young up-start docs that rule Canberra in Mental health. Try again genius.

Just drink a few litres/day of Dr Pemberton’s special alixir – found in all supermarkets, corner stores and petrol stations – and you’ll feel much calmer.

I think the law requires that two psychiatrists concur before you can get the prescription. I don’t know if Dr Tym’s accomplice is still practicing and can’t remember his name.

Gah! PBO’s a speed freak!

Also – Jenkum. GOLD! Also agree this probably is a trolling attempt. How naive of me.

Have you had a professional diagnosis that you need this medication already? If so, you may be able to get your earlier diagnosing/describing doctor to write or otherwise communicate this to your new one.

I don’t think you’ll get a doctor who will prescribe off-the-cuff without first diagnosing the condition and then determining which, if any, meds are appropriate. Which is probably for the best all round. It won’t help you much to be on medication that you don’t need right now, or worse, is something you’re better off without.

I was prepared to offer you the name of my pill doctor until I noticed your last commenter.

I hate your uppity northerners.

Mrloiter – I apologise if this isn’t the case and you really have been diagnosed ADHD, but it sounds to me like you’ve mistaken this forum for somewhere you can discuss easy access to Dexies. You’re in the wrong place, mate.

have you had a definitive diagnosis of ADHD? If you really had it, you might want 5 different psychiarists to actually agree to the same result before popping pills you think you need.

I don’t want to have to go round to 5 different psychiatrist’s and waste my time finding one that will presribe medication to me.

If you really had ADHD you’d want to go around 30 or more, every day.

Try the silk road.

Of course that would be because you’re suffering from ADHD?

There’s an ‘anti-meds’ culture at the moment my man, and a lot of psychiatrists are reluctant to prescribe ritalin and the like, especially to people who sound like they just want them to get high. There was a Dr. Tym in Manuka but he’s thankfully lost his practice because of how fast and loose he was with giving out prescriptions.

But Uni exams aren’t for three months?

You cannot be serious?
