Record Raiders crowd for Friday night

By johnboy - 14 September 2010 47

The ABC informs us that there are just a few standing room seats left after non-member tickets went on sale this morning for the Raiders final against the Tigers on Friday night.

The anticipated crowd of just over 26,500, exceeds Big Mal Meninga’s farewell 25,253 in 1994.

Due to a lack of additional seat building however it’s a slightly smaller crowd than the 28,753 who crammed in to watch the Brumbies play the Crusaders in 2004.

What’s Your opinion?

Plenty of crowds over the 10K mark this year #2, but nice try.

10k is woeful for a national rugby league crowd. Raiders have the second worst average in the comp for crowds. Poor for a one NRL team town.

The Tigers to burst that fraigile green bubble on Friday night!

Finishing 7th and qualifying for a home final is a bit daft. Equally, finishing 2nd and being given an away final is also scant reward for a far superior season over the previous 6 months.

Noooooo Panthers finished 2nd and qualified for a home final. Then they lost to the Raiders who finished in 7th. Forcing them to play an away game the following week instead of enjoying a bye.

So the home ground advantage then goes to the 2 teams who WON for week 2.

I think it great the Raiders now have a SOLD OUT crowd. Myself with family in toe have been to all Raiders home games this year and will do the same next year, why well really it’s because we enjoy live games and want to support the NRL not just the Raiders. I hope the final run for the Raiders brings in more members next year. I’m not a Raiders die hard fan my family supports 4 teams in the NRL which is healthy rivalry in our house especially this game daughter against daughter. Go the GREEN MACHINE

Don’t you just love the whinging coming out of Sydney about the Raiders getting a home semi? Danny “I love Mundine” Weidler had a moan on Nine News last night and there it was in the Telegraph again this morning. Those Sydney journos just can’t get used to the idea of interstate teams invading their cosy little club and winning.

I get the whole anti-Raiders thing, and yeah, suck it up Sydneysiders. But the current final 8 system used in the NRL is a bit of a farce. The AFL worked that out a few years back.

I’ll go out on a limb and suggest this will be THE most entertaining game of the season.
Goooooo the Tigers!

Must be all the Canberrans that have jumped on the Raiders bandwagon just because they’re winning…

At least the Raiders have a bandwagon when they’re winning. There are other teams that struggle for crowds when they are. (Roosters?)

It’s somewhat understandable though. You get your diehards who go to every game, but asking people to part with their hard earned cash for tickets, throwing in the inflated costs for food and drinks, to sit in the cold and watch your team lose isn’t everybody’s idea of fun.

The raiders have had some big crowds this season, i think it was about 18,000 in the Stgeorge game. I think people are going to watch them because they play entertaining league, it does help that they are winning. Go the Green Machine

I would think it wont really help the Brumbies next season, as many of us choose to get either a Brums or Raiders membership each season. Cant really say the Brums have been all that entertaining in the past few seasons.

The Raiders should have plenty of people out trying to sign up members for next year.

Well of cause they are. Look at the support the Socceroos get at the world cup. No one here actually likes soccer, they go for any home team who is winning.

#2 Better a bandwagon than nothing at all. You know negativity breeds negativity, better you don’t say anything at all.

Just got this in from DFAT, I assume this a directive from the Secretary Dennis Richardson who is a Canberra Raiders board member.

All staff are invited to a raising of the Canberra Raiders flag tomorrow, Wednesday 15 September at 11.30am, at the front entrance of the Department. Staff are welcome to wear anything green, including Raiders attire, to work tomorrow, or indeed for the rest of the week. Come and join in the fun.
