Originally built in the late 1800s, the former Saint Andrew’s Presbyterian Church at 1-5 Stroke Street, Adaminaby, has a great story to tell.
Completely dismantled in the 1950s, the church was one of two relocated, along with most of the old Adaminaby township, to make way for what is now Lake Eucambene.
Tonnes of Monaro granite, stained glass and timber were hauled almost 8 km away during the wettest season in half a century. It was quite the undertaking, but this labour of love meant the ‘new Adaminaby’ would retain one of its most important community hubs.
Today, the building is known as Saint Andrews Lodge. Carefully converted into a charming retreat, the lodge is surrounded by almost an acre of lush lawns and country gardens, and has become quite the popular spot for visitors looking for a quiet getaway.
Kelly Bortossi, principal agent at Belle Property Snowy Mountains, has worked in local real estate for more than a decade. She says the lodge isn’t just a charming home – it also represents a brilliant business opportunity.
“Saint Andrews Lodge has operated as a delightful short-stay retreat for nine years and attracts plenty of repeat guests with an average of 4.97 stars on Airbnb,” Kelly says.
“The block also has subdivision potential and an approved DA with Snowy Monaro Regional Council to build another residence.”
Adaminaby is a popular spot for trout fishing. It’s 10 minutes from Lake Eucambene and just over half an hour from Selwyn snowfields. This makes the town a great home base for travellers no matter the season.
The former church’s interior has been converted into a homey open-plan studio, self-contained with its own kitchen and bathroom. Airbnb visitors describe it as warm, comfortable and full of character.
Entry is via the quaint undercover deck, which is currently set up as a sunny alfresco dining area.
“This space is so inviting, full of light and has a wonderful relaxing aura,” Kelly says.
“It’s a truly unique bed and breakfast experience with all the modern comforts. I love the stone architecture, stained glass lancet windows, cathedral ceilings and timber floorboards.”
The kitchen is fully equipped with an electric oven, gas cooktop and dishwasher. The bathroom is modern, with an oversized shower supported by a rustic wood-fired bath outdoors.
What was once the church hall is now a gorgeous little cottage that’s been extensively renovated by the current owners. It could be used as a caretaker’s residence, or for those who would live in the main building, as extra space for guests or a teenagers’ retreat.
There is also an art and picture framing studio that Kelly says could be included in the sale.
Parking is no problem here, thanks to a modern double carport attached to the large workshop, which is perfect for the discerning hobbyist, tinkerer or motoring enthusiast.
Outdoors is an oasis of manicured lawns, conifers and colourful shrubs. The large veggie gardens are complemented by an established blueberry patch, as well as mature apple, cherry and plum trees.
Kelly believes the lodge would suit tree-change buyers looking for a lifestyle property characterised by its history.
“This would be a wonderful home for a retired couple, single professional or small family,” she says.
“It’s a gorgeous property in a small, friendly town and has the added bonus of extra income potential. What more could you need?”
