We all love a good takeaway, especially when you don’t feel like dressing up and dining out. A delicious meal that you haven’t had to cook yet you can still enjoy in your own home is one of many modern-day creature comforts.

But over the years, the food we’re able to enjoy at home has evolved to be more than dishes from your favourite local Thai or Chinese restaurant.

It’s common knowledge that COVID-19 forced businesses to pivot as lockdowns and restrictions have ordered cafes, bars and restaurants to halt dine-in trade. With some parts of Australia in lockdown again and masks mandatory throughout Australia, many businesses have lost bookings and are again seeing a decrease in dine-in customers.

It’s so important that we continue to dine out safely and support our favourite businesses if we can. But I want to introduce you to some different options you might not have considered ordering.

I’m talking about the unique options like heat-and-serve meals, takeaway pre-made cocktails, dessert boxes and donut bouquets. So I’ve rounded up some delicious and unique takeaway options that are a little outside (but mostly inside) the box.

Ramen kits from Ramentic

So ramentic. Ramen kits from Ramentic in Braddon mean you can enjoy ramen at home whenever you crave it. Photo: Supplied.

There are some serious ramen lovers in Canberra and I’m one of them. Ramen restaurants continue to pop up in Canberra, but Ramentic was the first restaurant in Canberra to specialise in ramen. It mirrors similar restaurants in Japan with limited seating and a menu that features mainly ramen with a few other dishes available.

There’s nothing worse than ordering a bowl of takeaway ramen that’s cold with soggy noodles when you go to eat it. Cue, ramen kits. A few restaurants in Canberra have offered DIY ramen kits – one of them that still does is Ramentic.

They have four different options and their ramen boxes feed two people for $36 or $38. You’ll receive individually portioned packets of noodles, toppings and broths so you can make it up at home and enjoy a hot and fresh delicious bowl of ramen when you’re craving it.

Ramentic is located at shop 134/24 Lonsdale St in Braddon and is open Wednesday to Sunday from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm for lunch, and from 5:00 pm to 9:30 pm for dinner. Visit Ramentic to see the menu.

High Tea boxes

Hotel Realm's high tea

I know how much people love high tea. Recent posts I shared on social media about high teas in Canberra reached more than 50,000 enthusiastic high tea lovers. It’s a delicious and fun experience and an opportunity to get dressed up and socialise with your bestie, family or friends.

Now you can enjoy high tea at home or wherever you want because a taste of Hotel Realm’s popular high tea is now available to go thanks to their recently launched online cake shop and high tea boxes.

High tea costs $50 per person, and the boxes are filled with savoury and sweet delights like gin and tonic cheesecake, dark chocolate mousse cake and mini quiches.

The cakes and high tea boxes are available for pickup only from Buvette, 18 National Circuit in Barton between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm Wednesday to Sunday. A minimum of 48-hours’ notice is required. Visit their Hotel Realm to find out more.

Sweet boxes and bunches of donuts

The Bunched Co

Kristen Zellar launched The Bunched Co back in 2017 when she was just 19. I was one of the first lucky people to receive one of her edible bunches back then and her business has continued to grow since. Originally starting as a digital business delivering bunches of personalised donuts and chocolate-coated strawberries, Kristen has recently started offering a selection of boxed treats. Some are colour-themed, while others are filled with donuts, brownies and a range of other sweet treats.

I’ve sent a few bunches of donuts to friends and family over the years and they’ve always been very well received. While they make the perfect gift for others, I think it’s perfectly acceptable to treat yourself to a bunch or a box of treats.

You can order your treats from The Bunched Co online and they can be delivered to all Canberra suburbs, Hall, Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra, Googong and Royalla.

Visit The Bunched Co to find out more about delivery options and their range of sweet treats.
