Tetun Language Speaking Group in Canberra?

trevar 6 May 2013 3

Having just returned from East Timor and planning to return before too long, I’d like to be able to practise my Tetun in between visits. The ANU has a six-year-old webpage about starting one, but the contact email address has shuffled off this mortal coil and joined the bleeding choir invisible.

So I’m wondering if any of my fellow rioters know of a living, breathing group of Tetun speakers who meet to speak to each other in Tetun and might welcome a beginner?

Hau bele kolia Tetun.

I was never able to find an active group. Happy to chat, deal with TL often and miss the language.

Tetun is being taught at the ANU this year. Contact student.admin.chl@anu.edu.au and ask them to put you in touch with the person teaching it. They might know about such groups.

There was a really annoyingly loud woman at Tilley’s on Sunday speaking Tetun to her partner. She was only matched in the annoying stakes by her baby, who was freely allowed to bang a cup on the table for 10 minutes without interruption. I note the annoying nature of the situation since this was my sacred two hours off from my own angelic little dear, who was happily playing at home with his dad.

Don’t know if this helps you much but it helps me. In all seriousness, I suggest you contact DFAT to see if they know of any language groups. They have internal ones that public servants can join in on last time I checked. Failing that, you could try to hunt down a community group or uni language circle. There would surely be some language association given that AusAID is in town.
