For this week’s edition of The Brunch Run, I was determined to try somewhere a bit different; somewhere I hadn’t seen popping up on Instagram or on Facebook. I had spotted a small cafe at the Ainslie Shops a few weeks ago that I previously had never noticed before so I decided to give it a whirl.

Breizh Cafe in Ainslie isn’t an old cafe, a crêperie to be precise, having opened its doors in December 2013. It’s a family-run business, the owners spent a year living in Brittany and upon their return to Australia conjured up the idea of bringing a little bit of Brittany to the nation’s capital.

Their menu says that at a traditional crêperie you would eat a savoury galette made from buckwheat flour (gluten free, good news for coeliacs!) which would then be followed by a sweet crêpe. This would all be accompanied with wine or cider, however it was only 9.00am so we decided to skip the alcohol suggestion and go with the savoury followed by sweet suggestion.

I ordered a ham and cheese galette, minus the ham and add spinach and tomato, and my partner ordered the ham and cheese galette, add bacon.

When they arrived I was a little surprised at how they looked. I expected them to be folded over with the filling in the middle, but I suppose this is a galette and not a crepe. I rolled it up with my knife and fork and tucked into it. It was delicious! The buckwheat flavour was interesting, probably because I don’t think I’ve ever had buckwheat before, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Plenty of fillings (even though it doesn’t look it in the photo) and it was a really satisfying meal.

I could have done with just the galette but we’d already ordered the sweet crêpes so I pushed on (let’s face it, this wasn’t that difficult in the grand scheme of things). We both had ordered a crêpe with sugar and lemon juice. These came out looking more like the type of crêpe I had expected in the beginning. And they were perfect. Just the right balance of sweet and sour and the crepe itself was soft for the main part and slightly crispy around the edges. Delicious!

It was great to go to Breizh Cafe for something a bit different from your usual cafe breakfast. I want to go back and try all the different crêpes now!
