The Globemaster over the lake

The Air Force’s brand new C-17 globemaster was showing off over the Lake today and I went down to get some pictures. It was not a good day to try and photograph a grey plane on a grey sky (they paint them that colour for a reason). Here’s a slideshow of the big (but surprisingly quiet) beast (apologies for YouTube fuzziness):

And here are some sharper stills:

A wonderful piece of machinery which the ADF will get a great deal of use from.

Not bad for about A$500 million each!

Here is a pic from the defence website. Must have been taken from the plane that was buzzing around it like a persistent blowfly. Be warned, the photo is 8MB!

Lots of point and shoot cams come standard with 10x optical soom.

DSLRS cost a mint for lenses – 10x equvalent (300mm approx) can cost betwen 250 to > 1500 clams depending on quality.

I am envious of Mrs Danmans Fuji Finepix S5500 with its 10x optical zoom – but it will never have as big a CMOS sensor as my D70 – and no were near as much manual functions.

Horses for courses I guess.

Also the pilot was very obliging by coming over low, slow and close a few times.

Nope, It’s a significantly cheaper all-digital Konica Minolta Dimage Z3.

Only 4 megapixels, but I was OK with that because I bought it to publish to the web and not print to A3.

It does, however have 12x optical zoom, a very good anti-shake system, and very fast auto-focus, all handy things for this sort of thing.

Here’s a review.

Just out of interest JB, were you using a digital SLR? Must have heaps of zoom for those great close ups.

Fat little sucker, isn’t she?

We got a good view of it circling over Deakin too.

Bloody impressive. I took a few on my camera phone as it came over our building each time.

The last time it came over it was heading north out of town and started to pick up speed/altitude – shook the building.

Prancing Horse? Must be powered by Ferrari!

Ahh, I should have read the riotact more carefully! There’s a link to a RAAFnews story in one of the comments on the earlier C17 article, which says that they’re going to 37SQN (which no longer operates hercs and has moved to Amberley).

It’s 36 Squadron which is moving from RAAF Richmond to Amberley to fly the Globemaster.

37 Squadron is staying at Richmond and will incorporate 36SQN’s existing Hercules.

awesome pics!!

Anyone know which squadron is going to be operating them? I don’t recognise the prancing horse on the tail.

Has Troy Williams put a campaign poster on the side yet …
