After a two-year pause, the National Folk Festival is making a welcome return to the Canberra annual event calendar.

Running over the Easter long weekend from 14 to 18 April, it is one of the largest folk culture festivals in Australia.

Held at Exhibition Park in Canberra, the festival combines a wide variety of quality live music, food and drink stalls, performers, craft activities, handmade goods, circus and street performers, competitions and more.

Six-year Folkie veterans Michael and Maryanne Devey of Win’s Creek Meadery and Pottery are preparing to showcase some handcrafted goods at one of the Festival’s many stalls.

“Michael and I are organising picnic boxes this year, which is a new thing for us to do for the Folk Festival,” Maryanne said.

“The boxes will feature our raw honeycomb and we’ll be pairing it with some cheese and other goodies like our Easter biscuits, some nice crusty bread and our pear and hazelnut roulade.”

Win’s Creek Meadery and Pottery will also be selling their freshly made Australian ginger beer and mixed herb and spices root beer, as well as serving a variety of non-alcoholic mulled meads designed specifically for the Festival, including Vikings blood, passionfruit, honey and Celtic apple.

“The kids can try the Vikings blood drink, which is based on the traditional Scandinavian mead made out of cherries. It’s very good for you, too, because cherries have great health benefits and they contain antioxidants,” Maryanne said.

Michael and Maryanne said they love meeting the crowd at the Festival every year as everyone is so lovely and relaxed.

“It’s just such a wonderful atmosphere. Everyone’s smiling and happy. The National Folk Festival gathers so many like-minded people interested in the world and the environment of music [who] appreciate handcrafted drinks, all the same sort of stuff that we love,” Maryanne said.

Maryanne will also be featuring her handcrafted ceramics, cups, garden bells and beeswax candles from their recent harvest, as well as earrings that she has been working on for months.

Mr Puffs’ signature original Greek doughnuts will be among the many delicious foods and delights the Festival has to offer.

“We are going to be doing loukoumades,” Mr Puffs stall holder Michael Protopsaltis said.

“They’re golden brown and crunchy on the outside, and soft and fluffy on the inside, and then we put your favourite toppings on top, with things like Nutella, sugar, cinnamon, caramel, honey, walnut and many more,” he said.

The husband and wife food vendors, Michael and Eugenia Protopsaltis said this was their first year bringing Mr Puffs to the Festival.

“We had heard through word of mouth that it was a very good and very well run event,” Michael said.

“Our philosophy is as simple as the ingredients in our doughnuts; we always serve hot, fresh doughnuts at a reasonable price and put a smile on every customer… we can’t wait.”
