The Vicar of Dibley! Channel 7 slaps AFL fans in the face

All winter we’ve had to put up with delayed AFL broadcasts into Canberra as Channel 7 decided that Ghost Whisperer was a better prospect.

Now that Finals have come around I was hoping that maybe, just maybe, Channel 7 would play the game at 8:30 but no – instead we get The Vicar of F*king Dibley! Surely a Geelong V St. Kilda final would outrate The Vicar of Dibley?

Agreed, no sympathy from me.

Yep, me too. Too much bloody sport on TV and why, oh why, do we have to see thugs beating the hell out of each other, ad nauseum, in so-called sports news? So much for teaching kids about fair play etc.

Yes because ‘reality’ tv, American sit coms and tabloid current affairs shows teach kids such valuable lessons. Give yourself an uppercut son.

If you’re relying on tv for entertainment (especially free to air), then you might need to find yourself a new hobby.

For all my protesting, I can’t say I watch a whole lot of TV any more. In fact, watching sport is about the only non-recorded TV I watch any more, so I’m really just whinging for the sake of it. Used to piss me off in pre PVR/DVD days though.

+1 for being shit to tears by this. State of Origin is the worst example, wasting what could otherwise be a perfectly normal Wednesday night. They could at least have the decency to play it on a friday or saturday when no one cares what is on.

SOO is on for a grand total of three nights a year. Three!

Surely three nights isn’t asking too much? That still leaves 362 nights of re-hashed, 10-year-old British situation humour and formulaic BBC murder mysteries for the blue-rinse-and-Metamucil set to feast on.

VG

I prefer to think of non-boofheads as cheese eating surrender monkeys.

If you don’t have Foxtel, justin.tv and various other streams can come in handy… or so I have been told.

I mean if you’re going to run with the stereotype that all who watch and participate in sports/football are ‘boofheads’ then be prepared for the reverse, that those who’s views oppose are insipid, vapid nancies

It’s a bit of a leap from saying that the people playing the kind of professional football that gets Live broadcast is a boofhead – to accusing all people who play or watch sport as being a boofhead.

Being a Formula one fan, I feel the pain of the AFL fans. For the last 5-6 years I have had to wait until after whatever ‘reality’ show was the flavour of the week to see the F1 races. It was often delayed 3-4 hours after the races, by which stage I have seen who won and seen the highlights on youtube. The best ones where when the Late Night News was on right before the race and would announce the winner…..god job numbnuts, now all your potential viewers are off to bed.

Thankfully OneHD has saved me from that pain.

Foxtel, OneHD and the various other HD networks. I haven’t missed a live game of any description that I wished to watch all year.

Real sports fans aren’t tight arses about ensuring their viewing choices. Get with the times. You pay, you see.

“Because everyone can just up and go down to Melbourne every week, especially on a Friday. People have lives.”

Lives where their asses are anchored to the recliner apparently

Channel 9 delays the NRL broadcast until after midnight around most of the country.

Sports programming is only shown ‘live’ (or close to) in those markets that it appeals to.

How many stations do we have now to cater for those that don’t want to watch sport? That old argument against sport never washed and washes less and less as time marches on.

There is no defence for the Channel to show a replay of an ancient British formula-comedy (which I liked when it was first shown decades ago) over a live final. If I wanted to watch a show like Vicar of Dibley on a Friday evening, DVD, video plus the hard drive of my STB have plenty of similar shows. They are also all over some of the secondary digital channels.

I imagine the Channel reckons fans will watch the delayed telecast anyway. If so, they are wrong and last night, they ensured that sports fans watched Win.

Channel 7 screws every sport they touch, the sports should realise that and stop selling the rights to them. The Olympics were a joke.

Yeah, because the clubs don’t get any share of the $1bn in television broadcast rights do they, haha!

Wow, what a game to not to be shown live.

Eyeball In A Quart Jar Of Snot10:26 pm 03 Sep 10

The AFL isn’t even broadcast live in Melbourne, so you’re not going to get it live in Canberra.

Rollersk8r says

‘It angers me as well – but the broadcast agreement (since 2007 – and until 2011) says Fox owns Friday nights in the ACT. Unfortunately it’s not 100% Channel 7’s fault (even though their national policy is that Better Homes and Gardens takes preference over Friday night AFL’

Fox don’t own Friday night, as you say. Nor do they even show the game on Fox Sports. As part of the broadcast deal they make their Main Event channel available to all subscribers to show the AFL Live in Sydney and Canberra.

My understanding is that Prime could even show the game live from 7.30pm if they liked, but as they have done for the last fifteen years or more (expect for the five years they didn’t have the coverage when WIN did) is treat the AFL like a yo yo with starting times varying from 7.30pm to 11.30pm.

grumpyrhonda8:38 pm 03 Sep 10

I hate AFL and still think it would be better to watch that the Vicar!

The Vicar of Dibley is a load of poo.

But it’s better than the AFL.

Shame on you complaining about not being able to see the sport that you refuse to support, at the time that is convenient to you!

Because everyone can just up and go down to Melbourne every week, especially on a Friday. People have lives. They can choose to support their club by buying memberships. The rod up your butt must have a rod in it’s butt.

I couldn’t give two craps about the clubs and their income. Get rid of the pokies and bring back live music.

no.. no…. no… no…. no…. no….. errr, okay.

Oh, I also really like the Vicar of Dibley, but it is an insult that a repeat of a show that Prime didn’t have the desire to cover first time around is now put on in place of a football final (regardless of the code).

Holden Caulfield4:16 pm 03 Sep 10

It’s shit like this that makes me want to punch Nicole Livingston in the face when she craps on about wanting to keep sport on free to air television, haha!

As an aside, I have Foxtel so I have an interest in seeing more sport being allowed to be broadcast LIVE and I’ll be watching the footy tonight in the comfort of my own home anyway.

Unfortunately, chewy14 is right. You “need” Fox if you want decent/acceptable AFL coverage in this town (or NRL too for that matter).

Its like the first sign of Summer isn’t it – an AFL fan spitting the dummy because he cant see his aerial ping pong on television. Get off your fat arse mate and go to a club or better still go to the match itself. Whine whine whine….

…and yet we AFL fans have the grace not to derail topics about other sports over code wars.

It’s Prime and Prime only who are to blame here. When Ten had free reign I believe they showed every finals game live into the ACT. But viva’ la Foxtel for me anyway.

Up the mighty Sainters!

Suck it up, Dtrain! Sport haters have had to put up with the opposite problem for decades! Some boofhead kicks a ball, and we’re all supposed to miss the next episode of our favourite show to watch the bloody spectacle of their latent homoeroticism!

At the very least, football should be rated M and not screened before 9:30pm. Won’t somebody think of the children?

At least this week I can briefly jump on the Raiders bandwagon – then hop off just in time for the delayed AFL to start…

There’s only one game of football worth watching tonight and it’s not the AFL. Go the Raiders!

YEY !!! Go Vicar!
Love that show!

Aparrently Sydney is “our” team so we get those games at normal times but not others.

If you love your AFL that much then get FOXTEL or walk down the local club.

Suck it up princess.

there is no way in hell that the Vicar of Dibley would outrate an AFL final.

DeadlySchnauzer2:16 pm 03 Sep 10

Yay Vicar of Dibley.

amarooresident32:14 pm 03 Sep 10

It’s on live Fox 518 if you want to got to a club.

Personally I’m not a big AFL fan and would probably prefer the Vicar of Dibley. But something about the Ghost Wisperer show irritates me. I think it is because whenever I hear the title, I think of the Horse Wisperer, then wonder why she is talking to dead horses?

a mate of mine always goes to Bali this time of year and we always joke that he gets to watch the AFl live there and I don’t – go figure.
