Get creative, get laughing, get out and get your groove on! What isn’t happening in Canberra this week? Seriously, there’s something for everyone this week in the capital.

Multiple days

100 Faces Project

When: 19 January to 21 January, 10 am to 4:30 pm (Friday and Sunday) or 9 am to 4:30 pm (Sunday)
Where: National Portrait Gallery of Australia, King Edward Terrace, Canberra
Cost: Free entry.

The Archibald Prize is one of Australia’s best-known art prizes – and this is your chance to get in on the (portrait) fun. The public is invited to design a portrait in the National Gallery’s 100 Faces Project. All materials are provided, so you just have to bring your creativity.

FLIGHT: Drone SkyShow and Night Markets

When: 25 January to 27 January, 5 pm to 10:30 pm
Where: Commonwealth Place, Queen Elizabeth Terrace, Parkes
Cost: Free entry and optional registration via Eventbrite will mean you receive event updates.

Inspired by the Vivid Festival in Sydney, this one-of-a-kind show will transform Lake Burley Griffin. The night will start at 5 pm with a night market. The drone show will take flight from 8:30 pm when 600 drones begin their programmed display. Each show will last for 12 minutes and be visible from the main event hub (located at Commonwealth Place), as well as Mount Ainslie and anywhere along the shoreline of the Central Basin.

Kate Miller-Heidke’s Catching Diamonds tour

When: 19 January, from 7:30 pm
Where: Canberra Theatre Centre, Civic Square, London Circuit, Canberra
Cost: Tickets cost between $75 and $89 (plus transaction fee) and are available via the Theatre Centre’s website.

Singer-songwriter Kate Miller-Heidke is stopping by Canberra as part of her Catching Diamonds tour. Her setlist will include her greatest hits, music from her upcoming sixth studio album, and tracks from her original musicals Muriel’s Wedding the Musical and the new Bananaland. There will also be chances for attendees to get involved – she’ll take requests and tell stories from her career.

Juicy Fest Canberra

When: 19 January
Where: Stage 88, Commonwealth Park
Cost: Tickets cost between $269.10 and $1041.50 (depending on the ticket package chosen) and are available via The Ticket Fairy.

The Juicy Fest hip-hop and R&B music festival is coming back! After stopping in other Australian and New Zealand cities, the 18+ festival will have its latest outing in the ACT. T.I., T-Pain, The Game and Ashanti have been confirmed as headliners, and they will be joined by various supporting acts. Festival season isn’t over yet, so get ready to party and don’t forget to pick up some third-release or VIP tickets.

Royale with Cheese Rock Show

When: 20 January, from 7 pm
Where: The Basement, 2 Cohen Street, Belconnen
Cost: Tickets cost $51 and are available via OzTix.

Embrace the nostalgia that comes with 90s music when this tribute band takes us back in time on Saturday! Royale with Cheese is coming down from Sydney to play rock and pop covers. Head over to Belconnen and spend an evening enjoying the best Australian rock, grunge, Britpop and more music from the 90s.

Music in the Mountains

When: 20 January, 3 pm to 7 pm
Where: Corin Forest, 1268 Corin Road, Paddys River
Cost: Tickets cost between $15 and $30 (those under 12 have free entry) and are available via the resort’s website.

This family-friendly music event will see two Canberra-based music acts head into nature for a gig. Kopasetic is an indie-roots sextet, and they will be joined by Ava Martina, a Canberra-based musician. If you want something to nibble on during the show, check out the picnic package – there is also a vegetarian option so no one goes hungry.

Festival of the Winds

When: 21 January, 11 am to 6 pm
Where: Patrick White Lawns, Queen Elizabeth Terrace
Cost: Free entry, though registration via TryBooking is necessary.

Turn your eyes to the sky when the Festival of the Winds returns to Canberra! In 2024, there will be plenty of chances to fly kites. A DJ will perform throughout the day, and patrons can take in jumping castles, face painting, henna and kids activities to keep everyone entertained.

Wednesday

Join Sarah Stewart, Jeremy Smith, Patrick Vann, Trish Hurley, Jeff Shen and MC Laura Johnston for a night of laughs (as well as a feed and maybe a cheeky frothy or two from Ale Mary Brewing).
