Two people were taken to hospital after a two-car crash this morning that left a major Canberra road closed for much of the day.

The incident happened on William Hovell Drive, west of the John Gorton Drive/Coppings Crossing Road intersection.

The ACT Emergency Services Agency (ACT ESA) released an alert shortly after 7 am on Thursday (17 October), asking people to avoid the area.

An ESA spokesperson told Region the incident involved two cars and left William Hovell Drive closed in both directions.

“There were serious injuries, so both patients were extricated [from their cars].”

The two people were then taken to hospital, the spokesperson said.

ACT Ambulance Service, ACT Fire and Rescue and ACT Policing were also called to the scene.

An ACT Policing spokesperson said the road re-opened shortly after 1 pm once the cars were removed from the road.
