U Turning like a bus

By johnboy - 6 September 2012 15

Matt has sent in this intriguing effort of an ACTION bus to make a U Turn from 2011.

Uploaded by DRIVINGCANBERRA on Feb 16, 2011
Came across the ACTION bus trying to do a u-turn across Caswell Drive in Canberra. Luckly for the driver, it didn’t get stuck

Oh and btw, particularly after you had assisted your attacker’s children and/or friends and family Matt.

This may be the most difficult to dissect comment I’ve come across on RA this year.

My question to Matt is the following:

How would you feel, either in your line of work, and/or driving a vehicle, for people to tape you for every single incident you have done on or off the road (mistakes included in which you had learned at the time of the incident) never to be repeated, then sent it off to the Riot Act a good lengthy 6-7 months later for many Canberra residents to attack YOU in your career?.

You’re allowed to cross a SINGLE continuous line to enter or leave a road-related area (eg. parking, shoulder, median strip, etc.). I’m not sure why this is seen as so dangerous – the video clearly shows it is sign-posted with a 60km/h speed limit and there is good visibility in both directions – of course, the driver of the bus must give way to all other traffic which it appears he/she is doing.

Blind and stupid. The bus isn’t giving way, the bus is being dangerous. If you can’t see either of those obvious facts, please surrender your licence and hop on the bus.

Disagree. If you think that just because the bus is doing something that doesn’t fit your perception of what it should it’s automatically dangerous, then perhaps you’re the one who needs to surrender your licence on grounds of perception problems.

You sir, are a moron. This is why Canberra drivers suck so much. If other cars have to take evasive action to not run into you, then you are not giving way.

Bus entered a road, in the path of oncoming traffic, failing to give way and forcing the traffic to stop (right lane) and take evasive action (left lane, car with camera).

It’s pearly by any objective standard dangerous and reckless driving.

All the debate about line markings is moot. You don’t jam your vehicle out in front of oncoming traffic, particularly when it’s a bus and not something that can turn on a dime quickly.

add on a couple of slowies not keeping left unless overtaking….

Quite legal (even if annoying) – the rule that you must keep left unless overtaking only applies to roads with a speed limit GREATER THAN 80km/h (ie. 90 km/h and above). The road in the video (at the time the video was taken) is clearly sign-posted 60 km/h.

Clearance/area off the road to the right; technically not a U-Turn performed on the road in the middle of traffic and is therefore not breaking the Law.

That isn’t the law that was broken. The bus crossed a solid dividing line in a place not specified as an exception in the national uniform road rules. Even if it was legal (it wasn’t) it is unsafe and I am sure that ACTION management would be interested.

The sad part of course is that there is a legal and safe place to execute a U-turn only a few hundred metres away. So it is illegal, unsafe and just plain stupid.

Not sure about your decision to go past and hardly slow down Matt. But still pretty funny.

Bus driver should be charged for this. Illegal and dangerous. And where the hell did he think he was going?
