There are nearly 700 Canberra bands with tracks on the TripleJUnearthed website. In 2011 we’re going to explore them.
Today we lift the lid on BStarz who describe themselves thusly:
BornStarz, Canberra based hip hop crew. 4 MCs,
Obi M, 18 – Nigerian, Specialty – Rhymes/Lyrics/Flows
Guchi M, 20 – Nigerian, Speciality – Smooth/Seductive Flows
Young L [J.Chil’], 18 – Jamaican, Speciality – Distinct Voice/Mixing English and Jamaican Lyrics
Mic-Tey, 21 – Ghanian, Speciality – Vocalist with minor Smooth Flows. The MCs have made their mark on the hip hop scene in Australia, slowly making a name around local city and interstate.
Behind the scene guys, the Beat Pioneers,
KiddBass [JinxBeats], 17 – Persian, – Producer; Synths Expert.
Hasin [Krystal Kurry], 18 – Bengali, – Manager; Events Management; Producer; Vocal Producer. The Team of 6 is the ultimate hip hop group. And to come from a city like Canberra which is Neglected in the Music industry, they are slowly but steadily putting Canberra and the Capitals name out into AU and places like Germany who are developing their own fansite.
I’ll admit my heart sunk slightly when I saw the randomiser had pointed me at a hip hop band. I own a bit of Jurassic Five and Micheal Franti, but it’s not my favourite thing.
And yet I’ve had the two tracks on rotation now for a couple hours and, well, I like it.
Tracks:
2AM:
First things first. This is no “Aussie Hip Hop”. If I had to guess where the music was from without knowing it was Canberran I’d guess Detroit or New York.
The production is slick, the recording it top notch, the song is paced well, has a bit of narrative to it, and the voices are superb for what they’re trying to do.
No Company:
Heading more into rap territory this number also has more of the borderline misogyny which afflicts the genre. Not quite as strong as 2AM, it’s still a genuine toe tapper.
Overall:
Pretty good stuff to blast on the stereo when you’ve got the car window open. BStarz are a talented bunch.
Four starz
