Unearthed Review continues its inexorable progress through the Canberra musicians on the TripleJ Unearthed website.
Moving on through the “drummed” artists we come to Young & Restless, who with an ID number 0f 478 were one of the very first bands onto the unearthed bandwagon.
They have this to say about themselves:
we are young and restless. we found each other in april 2005. we play noisy repetitive party music. we like to keep it simple. we have played with many good bands such as Die! Die! Die!, Damn Arms, the Suicide Girls and more. we like to play fast. we just play. we don’t think about influences or messages. put us on at a party. we promise it will riot.
Noisy repetitive party music. Check.
Think a cross between Sonic Youth and Helmet.
Y&R are one of Canberra’s most successful bands of recent times but they’re not going to be everyone’s cup of tea.
A lot of people really hate them.
But I did find the sole track “Satan” to be an excellent soundtrack to the construction porn of Canberra Airport terminal erection.
They can be a be bit grating and there’s not a lot of complexity there. But at the same time they get the toes tapping and the shoulders bopping.
Three stars.
