Finally! Since seeing the announcement that Smoque was opening a second restaurant in Woden I’ve been waiting! Even better was when they announced it would include a breakfast menu! I’ve been frothing at the mouth for months.
On Friday morning, during the first week it was open I was more than ready to put it to the test! It seems it’s still a well kept secret as there were only 10 or so customers when I went at 10am.
The breakfast menu is excellent, there’s a large range of waffles and then there’s the non-waffle side filled it american classics like a bagel with smoked salmon and a very interesting Hawaiian dish of rice, chicken gravy, fried eggs and a burger patty.
Being an eggs benedict lover I chose the Benny Hill waffle, it came with fried chicken, waffle, 2 poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. I was slightly hesitant as all those things don’t sound like they’d go together. I also ordered a big cup of flat white to wash it down.
My coffee came out first within about 5 minutes of ordering (big tick) and was a great temperature and nice strength, very smooth with only the tiniest bitterness to it.
Then came the dish! To look at I was slightly intimidated and didn’t think there was any chance I was going to finish it. And while I was hesitant about the combination of ingredients it was FREAKING DELICIOUS!
The slight spice of the buffalo sauce on the chicken, mixed with the savoury of the hollandaise sauce and the sweetness of the waffle. Combination heaven!!
The waffle was also so light that I easily polished off the entire meal and didn’t feel overly stuffed – just extremely satisfied.
I highly recommend this to anyone in the area, they also have a large outdoor seating area that will be divine in summer!
Smoque is located at 10 Bowes Street Phillip.
