Where does your nanna get her hair done?

By roll-up 12 December 2009 12

I’m looking for a hairdresser that won’t freak out at me asking them to do old-fashioned haircuts and shampoo-and-sets as done in the 1940s and 1950s. I’ve been to quite a few of the more highly recommended hairdressers around the ACT and NONE of them has ever managed to get things right – they always want to add trendy modern things or never really understood that when I say I want my fringe and layers cut in a very specific way, I really do mean it, and I do in fact want granny curls brush styled, not a body wave.

So I’d like to know where the 70+ age group gets their hair done. I know many mature ladies have gone the Judi Dench/Margaret Pomeranz route with the short crop, but there are still some who go with the curl set. Where are they getting their styling done? Or does anyone know of a hairdresser who is themselves older and would have originally been trained in these techniques? Or a younger hairdresser who has genuine vintage nous? Any pointers greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You can also try Absolute Hair in Queanbeyan is that’s not far of a drive.

Fisher Shops has an old fashioned hair dressers if it is still there. It is a one-woman show as well but is only open during the week from memory.

My wife thinks I am anal because I have had the same hairdresser for 25 years, and she is the only person who has cut my hair in that time. I have followed her through 4 salons in that time.

She has her own salon now, works as a 1 person operation, and most of her clientelle are mature age ladies (and a few gents like me). She is in my opinion the best hairdresser in Canberra, but you need to check that out for yourself. You have to book a good week in advance to get in, but it is worth the wait. Just call her and have a chat first.

Her Details are:

Towsend Street Phillip

Good Luck.

When my parents lived here 2 years ago mum used to get her hair done at a hair salon in at the Flynn Shops.

Where are Flynn shops? Are they the ones that have Tillyard Drive Medical Practice there now? If so, there is no hair salon there any more.

My mum, 76yo, goes to Bentleys in Jamison. She has a wash and curl done each week. They don’t try and talk her into anything she doesn’t want and she always looks decent.

Bentley’s at Jamison doa lot of work for the near by older person’s facility.

They’d be able to do a proper set.

Try the hairdresser at Lyneham Shops. I’m sure lots of senior citizens go there.

What about the hairdressers that go to the local nursing homes? They’d be well versed in the art of the ‘do!!

Try your luck in a nearby town like Bungendore, Yass or Cooma. I have nothing more to offe than a hunch but you never know, you may also enjoy a venture away from the ‘big smoke’ too. I’d ring ahead though, how’s the price of feul at the moment eh?

When my parents lived here 2 years ago mum used to get her hair done at a hair salon in at the Flynn Shops. Not sure what it was called but they used to give her great “old lady” hair. They have some young apprentices but the two leading hairdressers (one who is owner) are the ladies to get. I might be self-shaming myself but it was also one of the only places I was able to get a perm a few years ago (and yes, it did turn out in lovely 80’s splendour) which is also testament to it being a bit of a nana salon???

I really struggled to find a hairdresser that does a decent mens cut, ended up going to a one-woman shop in Kingston. She does mostly women’s cuts/colours/styles as far as I can tell from the clientele. Closed all January though, so be quick!
