The Australian Institute of Sport has announced the’ve got a spot of Pertussis in the women’s water polo team:
he Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) has confirmed two members of the women’s water polo team and one coach, have been diagnosed with Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough.
We are working closely with medical professionals as well as ACT Health to ensure that every precaution is taken to prevent the spread of this infection. The water polo team is in camp at the AIS and has been placed in isolation to mitigate the risk of infection for athletes, staff and the public. All members and officials of the team have been tested.
Swimming Australia informs us that the 2012 Swimming Australia Grand Prix has now been cancelled as a result which will disappoint a great many people.
Swimming Australia has today cancelled the relay camp and 2012 Grand Prix scheduled for the AIS in Canberra this weekend, as a precaution to ensure athletes stay healthy and have the best possible preparation for London.
Following the announcement from the AIS today of a case of whooping cough from two of their visiting athletes, the decision was made to limit any risk of infection, mild or otherwise.
Swimming Australia Head Coach Leigh Nugent said the decision to cancel the camp is purely a precaution.
“We have spoken with the AIS and, whilst we are comfortable with the procedures they have put in place, we have decided to take this precaution.”
